When computer goes to sleep graphics card overheats

After installing Windows 7 HP 32Bit, I have had problems with my NVIDIA 7800 GS - AGP card going from 42C to 69C while asleep. I have basically turned all my profiles so that none of them turns anything off. I am using EVGA Precision to monitor it. As soon as I hit a key to wake it up it shows fan speed at 100% and GPU Temp around 69C (Normal operating temp is 40C to 42C) and then the temp starts rapidly returning to normal.

Any ideas why this is happening.

Its probably just the program thats off and it receives the correct temp after resuming, Does the card feel warm to the touch after being asleep for extended time?

Thanks for all your replies. Now I get to prove these theories by opening the case and testing the card's actual temp. It will be difficult because the case is pretty tight.

I went into NVIDIA performance and set up a 100% fan speed routine for the video card and Nvidia, Everest and EVGA Precision all report the temp at 69C and fan speed 100%. I'm thinking that if the fan does go off then the card would actually fry with no cooling which leads me to thinking that you are correct in saying that the temps are false at wakeup.

Yeah the temps on chips can rise in a fraction of a second. So the time that the unit goes through coming out of sleep before windows even fully wakes could be causing the GPU to heat up raidly. Then the driver FINALLY wakes up and turns the fan on. Sounds like an issue with the design of the MB or graphics section however. On boot, all fans should come on , then get turned down by drivers as necessary.

Maybe a setting for it in the bios?

This doesn't add up for me. The settings for power are all set to never sleep except for the screen. When I wake the screen up the temp of the VC is 69c GPU fan speed is 100%. Then the temp reduces to the normal 41C. I have set up a manual setting for the VC to never sleep in Nvidia control panel. I am going to try the program insomnia to see if I can prevent the computer from sleeping. I never had this issue in Windows XP. Maybe this is something that the Nvidia and Microsoft experts could shed some light on.

I have discovered a way to stop this anomaly from occurring. Set the monitor to never sleep. It seems when you set the monitor to sleep then my problem reoccurs.

Can anyone explain this?

Probably a bug. Wither in the windows power management or in the video driver. It shuts the fan down when it's not supposed to, as if it's assuming the computer itself is sleeping but then the video section is being left powered (because it's not) with the fan off...

Try an updated video driver if possible?
