    NVIDIA GF100 (Fermi) Technology preview

Last week we arrived in Sin City not only to cover CES, but because there was something else going on as well. In Las Vegas, NVIDIA had organized a briefing for a select group of the press. From Europe perhaps ten to fifteen people were invited for this somewhat privileged preview -- the topic, a technical overview of project Fermi. Fermi is of course the family name of the latest generation of GPUs from NVIDIA. The first chipset deriving from Fermi will be called the GF100 GPU which will likely be used on what we think will be called products like GeForce 360 and GeForce 380.
GPUs .. or should we call them graphics CPUs these days? As we certainly do see a large shift from using graphics cards as devices for gaming to a lot of other things as well. It does make one wonder, how long will it be before a GPU is to be considered the same as a CPU?

If it's not faster than the Radeon HD 5870, then they definitely did something wrong.

It should destroy both the 5870 and 5850.

EDIT: Maybe even catch up to the 5970. Who knows...

I think roughly speaking, it is >5870 by about 20%

You got to remember that its a still ia beta stage so who knows what it would be like, ATI could be making something but have not released the details about it yet.

it's gonna be the kind of card that you get to play the sims 3, and you suddenly think..."THIS is what it feels like to be God."

BETA stage or not... It would be foolish to think that the GF100 will fall short of the high end ATI cards.

But at the same time, ATI will definitely have something up their sleeve by then.

    Radeon HD 5890 anyone?

I LOVE when ATI & Nvidia get into their graphics wars races!
Makes for great cards & new tech at good end prices for the customers.

Anyways, from what I've read it's going to destroy.
It's not just a graphics card, but a Supercomputer processor in the body of a GPU. Totally new tech coming & it will have L1 & L2 cache, ECC memory (GDDR5) and C++.

Here's a vid on it... GF100 Fermi GPU demo...

If you read the end notes though...Fermi is not just directly focusing on being more powerful this gen...the focus of fermi is how we can get the GPU to do more than just being a GPU

If Fermi ends up being weaker than ATIs top card I won't feel bad as Fermi is going to do a lot LOT LOT more in the next few years...

Direct Compute and CUDA are no joke people...giving the chance, a Fermi GPU handling some of the work of the CPU is going to take us on one hell of a ride

Or you could not worry about supposed numbers that if real are most likely from a cherry picked engineering sample, and wait for actual reviews once the card comes out.
