Monitor not displaying native resolution correctly

My problem is my Acer x193w 19" wide screen monitor will not fill the entire screen real estate when the native resolution of the monitor is selected from the screen resolution menu in windows 7.

The native resolution of my monitor is 1440x900, this resolution worked fine in windows vista and in windows 7 until I had to re-install windows because of a hard drive failure, an now when I select 1440x900 the entire screen real estate is not filled, it is using the whole screen vertically however not horizontally and I have tried to adjust this on the monitor controls but it does not allow me to move the desktop into the right place. So this is what i end up with:

I have installed the catalyst control centre and latest driver for my graphics card however the control centre does not let me select the 1440x900 resolution and with the control centre install the windows screen resolution manager takes away the option of 1440x900 so I removed the driver and control centre and I was able to select 1440x900 again but still the same problem. so now I am back with the windows driver and no catalyst control centre but I don't know what to do now.

    My graphics card: Connect 3d - ATI Radeon X1550 - 512 MB - PCI Express x16
    Monitor: 19" Acer x193W

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have searched for hours with no solution, I will be happy to awnser any questions if needed.

What does it show for your monitor in Device Manager? If it is anything other than the correct name for it (generic plug and play, or non-lug and play), then it needs the monitor driver. If you haven't yet, run Windows Update and it should find a driver for your monitor (I know it did for my 2 Acer's).

It shows up as Acer x193w in device manager and the driver is the latest one available from acer (2007) however if I click update driver it reverts to Generic non-pnp monitor

with the driver from acer in the screen resolution manager it calls the monitor "Display device on: VGA" but when the generic non pnp driver is installed it is called " Generic non-pnp monitor" I don't know if this helps.

What happens if you use the default drivers for the monitor? Just today, in fact, I had problems with my video card. I downloaded the latest drivers from nVidia to no avail. I then updated the drivers from Device Manager and all is well.

The latest drivers were released last week. The ones I am using came out in September.

You're welcome! Glad I could be of some assistance.

To everyone else reading this: Remember, the latest drivers are not necessarily the best.
