"Display Adaptor" missing - not driver related

Last night I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, a fresh copy not an upgrade from Vista and my display adaptor is not showing up in the device manager. At first I thought the simple solution would be to install the drivers. But, it seems that windows does not even detect my video card, so the drivers will not even install, because the Hardware is not detected.

I reinstalled XP last night and the video card works perfectly, actually everything works in XP, so I know the video card is not bad.

I just do not understand why Windows 7 does not see the card.
I have tried just about everything I know to do.

I upgraded my MOBO BIOS and installed the latest chipset software.
I physically reinstalled the card, to make sure it was properly seated.
I have tried to "add legacy hardware" from the device manager and selected the "Display Adaptor" option, but all that does is give me a list of intel adaptors, so that does not work.

    Please follow the link below.
Here is the original thread that I posted in the nVidia forums
    http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=157995

    System Specs:
    OS: Windows 7 64bit
    Motherboard: Asus P5WD2-E Premium
Processor: Intel Pentium D Extreme Edition - 3.73ghz
    RAM: 4GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800
    Video Card: Gigabyte GV-3D1-7950-RH - GeForce 7950 GX2
    Monitor: HP 2709m Native Resolution - 1920x1080

Any suggestions would be arrpeciated. Thanks in advance for your help.

    Welcome!

In your BIOS, is the Primary video card set to PCIe?

    Hello Jonathan.

I am pretty sure that I do. I have been through the BIOS and this is the only thing that I can find that relates to the Graphics card.

Sorry for the large picture-using my camera and the ms-paint.

If you can load into XP, try downloading and running this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

Your adapter is likely not compatible.

Microsoft's site states that it is compatible with the 32 & 64 bit versions. But I might reinstall xp and run the compatibility test anyway.
Windows 7 Compatibility Gigabyte Gigabyte GV-3D1-7950-RH Graphics Card

I think I have found what the problem is, but I am not sure how to resolve the problem.

    Here is my Device Manager:

Apparently "This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)"
The two PCI Standard PCI to PCI Bridge items, shown below, are suffering from the lack of resources.

And the the PCI Input device, shown below, has a driver issue. However, I have been unable to resolve the driver issue because I don't know what device it refers to.

If I uninstall the two "PCI Standard PCI to PCI Bridge" items and the "PCI Input Device" and reboot the video card is detected at start up. It is listed in the device manager, but all of the item still have errors.

    Seen here

    and here

A reboot is required before I can use the items or even install the drivers. Once I reboot the card has disappeared.

    Shown here

    Any thoughts?
Any experts out there that know about system resources and how to manipulate them, or what the heck is going on?

This seems to be IRQ related. Go into your BIOS and disable the COM and serial ports. Then go through the drivers guide in my sig and use the unknown devices app to identify what those devices are. Then with resources freed up, run Windows Update first to check for any compatible driver updates, click the link for optional updates and thoroughly check out if there are any options.

Then get drivers for the unknown apps and GPU and install them one by one. Start with the GPU. If it fails, the Nvidia installer should have extracted them to a folder in your C:\ drive. Right click the entry for the card, select update, have file and point the search at the extracted folder. If you can't find the extracted folder, extract them yourself with Universal Extractor. Then install the rest of the drivers for the other devices.

I concur - looks like you need to install the Intel chipset drivers.

Here's the link to the latest:

Chipset: Intel® Chipset Device Software for Intel® Desktop Boards

I hope that it works for you. Dual GPU cards (like your 7950 GX2) can be a little more persnickety than single ones.

Thanks for the suggestion Frostmourne. I will try all of that today and see if it helps.

skunksmash - I install the MOBO Chipset drivers first. The video drivers will not even install because the nVidia installer can't see the card so I get this error message.

bobkn - I have installed the latest chipset drivers. The File Name - infinst911autol

I installed the OS and then immediately installed the intel chipset drivers and my BIOS is updated. The thing about the BIOS is that the most recent update was back in August of 2006, so maybe that is the problem.

I may have to apologize. On looking at your posts more carefully, I see the "resource" warnings. That doesn't look like anything that would normally result from drivers that were absent.

One thing that you may need that you don't seem to have are the ATK0110 drivers. I received mine through Windows Update, but they are also available for download from Asus:

    ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

(These are only listed through Vista, but I hope that they'll work on Win7.) I'm not knowledgeable about ACPI issues, but they involve controlling devices, so I hope that'll help you.

As regards the Intel chipset drivers, I'm not sure which version you have. The ones I supplied a link to are 9.1.1.1025. I believe that 9.1.1.1013 and later will install on Windows7 without any work-arounds. I suggest that you try the latest; if you already have up-to-date components installed, no actual update will occur.

    Good luck.
