I just finished installing a fresh windows 7 (ultimate), and now I can't seem to change my screen resolution. The default value is set to 800x600 and I can't get it to go any higher, it just flips back to the default value.
The screen is connected with a vga cable and all the drivers seem to be updated.
Before I upgraded everything was fine and dandy...
Does anyone have an idea about wha'ts going on?

What graphics card do you have? What monitor? Sure sounds like a driver issue. Is the card listed and showing as working in device manager?

Is your monitor recognised by Windows 7 or is it recognised as a Generic PNP Monitor or something familiar?
If so, changing drivers will probably not solve your problem because the monitors .inf file (or EDID file) used by Windows 7 is restricted to those resolutions you have now. Windows 7 will not use the monitors native info file but instead uses his own.
One way around is to create your own resolutions (with the Nvidia Control Panel, you are able to do that depending on the driver) and use these custom resolutions instead.
While in 'screen resolution', click on advanced settings, then monitor. Is it set at color 32bit or 16bit?

The problem with the resolution is no more...
The monitor was recognized by the system as a Generic PNP Monitor something something. What I did was looking over the drivers that was installed by the computer for the graphic card, in the devicemanager it said that the drivers were the best for the installed "standard vga graphic card". It just didnīt seem right so, as the computer does not belong to me but my parents, I was not sure of the model. i opened up the computer to find that it was an integrated graphic card. Then I updatded the card from the device manager with the software from the motherboard disc. Voila... It worked.
So basically, what it came down to was that I in fact did not have the apropriate drivers installed for the graphic card...

I have almost the same problem. Nvidia graphics card with updated drivers. A LG W2252TQ monitor that lacks drivers for win7. I want to set the resolution to 1680*1050 (which is suported by the monitor) but it is not recognized as that neither from the Nvidia Control panel or Windows "change resolution settings". The monitor is recognised as "generic non PnP monitor". It's connected with just a basic VGA cable)
I've tried to make a costum setting from the nVidia control panel, but since it's a duplicate of an existing setting, it doesn't seem to work. If I change scan type to interlaced (from progressive) I get a message that this resolution isn'nt supported by my monitor. Even though I know that it is!?

Thanks Lange. Seems to be enough possible solutions there to keep me busy for weeks. And hopefully also find a solution...
Took me quite a while to figure it out too but check the Tom's Hardware link in there to start.
