No, it's the intel card. My Dell D820 is just fine. It's got Nvidia.. Mom's D610 however has the Intel graphics card.I've read about Vista drives so maybe I'll fool around with that. Thats how I got the scroll function to work on the D610 (touchpad). I simply used my driver for the D820 on the D610.
I had this same problem with my Dell Latitude D610 with the Intel 915GM on board. Everytime I took the laptop off of AC power, my display would go to what appeared to be 8-bit mode, displaying minimal colors. When running on AC power, everything worked wonderfully!
I had tried everything! Then I found the solution that fixed this on my laptop. The answer lies not in Windows' power management console, as I had originally thought, or even in the bios (no options for video power management other than brightness). I was playing around with this issue again today and re-discovered the little Intel driver app that was loaded with the driver. I found it again by right-clicking on the desktop, going to graphics properties, allowing UAC to run the program and then going to "power settings" (bottom right-hand corner of the app in my version).
In that setting, there is an option for "Intel(R) Display Power Saving Technology" that was set all the way over to "Maximum Battery". I moved it all the way over to the other side to "Maximum Quality", clicked "OK", then "Apply". Then I took the power cord out of the laptop, and VOILA! - the display didn't change other than dimming to the bios' default.SWEET!
I hope this helps with this frustrating issue with Intel's chip.
