Windows update disables two monitors!

Hey all

I've just upgraded my edit suite (custom built) to Windows 7 from XP and to start off with everything was fine. The edit suite itself while on XP ran on 4 monitors (3 LCD and one HDTV) for when I was editing video for work. Upon launching 7 I had all the monitors come up immediately - fantastic!

Then windows updated itself - Installing all the drivers for the Graphics Card (ATi Sapphire 4350) and the motherboard drivers as it went.

Since then, not been able to get any more than two screens operational saying that the on board graphics card had a problem so had been disabled by windows - even though it didn't have such a problem on XP and didn't before the updates happened

I rolled it back to the beginning by going back to the original restore point and everything was fine! I set the monitors up ready to reload the editing software when suddenly two screens went off. It'd updated in the background - low and behold we're back again. It reports the error code 43 and has a problem code of 0000002B (A google search determines nothing really.)

Stupid system

Generally I never let windows update update ANY hardware drivers after first install.

They are frequently slimmed down bare bones functionality drivers compared to the official ones from the manufacturer, and that is /especially/ true for video drivers :)

Decided I'd do everything differently - install everything first and then update the system with automatic updates.

The update for the ATi graphics card is what's causing the problem and upon installation, killed off two monitors again. I rolled back the driver for the graphics card this time and everything works fine again. Any ideas how I can stop the computer from updating the card automatically but still update the rest of the system?

I've got the computer to come on while I'm at college every day so it goes through the updates while I'm out of the office (Opposed to it resetting the computer at the most annoying times which was a fault XP had).

My normal mode of operation is to set windows up to inform me of updates but not DL or install them. THen when the little popup saying there are updates comes up, I open the update center and manually slect the updates.

By default it should only autoselect the critical and important updates which never seem to include third party driver updates, those are always in the "optional" page all of which are unselected by default.

That way you not only get control of when it updates, you also get control over what it updates :) ANd yes, in full auto mode, W7 will update and reset right in the middle of playing a game or watching a movie :P

That's one thing that wound me up about XP. You'd be typing something and it would pop up and become the centre of attention just as you'd hit enter. It's like it knows when to be the biggest pain in the rear end the world has ever known!
