Honestly it's that or connect the display with DVI or HDMI. I'll even provide a direct download of the latest pre-RTM and help you with drivers. How much RAM do you have? 4GB or more and you'll want 64-bit unless you've got some hardware that you know doesn't work right in Vista 64.
i have 2 gigs of ram

OK, well this was quite an adventure but I think now I have the tools, VESA specs and math down to the point where I can manufacture monitor drivers. I can't guarantee that this will work since you don't actually have an EDID to override but it should work (in theory). One thing you have that I need is your monitor's .ICM file. You need to put that in the same directory to which you unzip the attached .INF file. Also, I have no capacity to create signed driver catalog files at this point so you will be warned that this driver is not digitally signed. I don't really think we need to get Microsoft involved in this, do you?

So, without further ado, download this Attachment 10375, unzip it to a working directory, copy the .ICM file from your original monitor .INF package to that working directory, start device manager and update your monitor driver manually. It will never automatically choose an unsigned driver so you'll have to use the "have disk" method to directly select the new .INF file. Once it's installed, log off and back on again and try your new resolution. If it fails try rebooting -- whether that's required appears to be up to the video card and driver.

Let me know what happens please as I put about 20 hours of work into this!
I answer to this very old thread since I have the same problem as the original poster: my monitor, an Acer AL1916w is not recognized anymore by the system, it appears as a a generic non plug&play monitor, and I cannot set the correct resolution 1440x900. I carefully read the thread ad followed your suggestions. but when I try to update the driver using your kaxfenix.inf I get an error message "data not valid".

I hope that maybe you can read this thread again and give me some useful suggestions to solve this issue. As an additional information that I can provide, I tried to start the pc using an Ubuntu live cd, and in that case the monitor is correctly detected from the os and the correct resolution is automatically set.

Edit: I found the service manual for the AL1916w at this link: http://www.manualowl.com/m/Acer%20Co...114994?page=18

I hope that it can help.

Forcing Screen Resolution Higher Than Native Resolution
Hi. I'm new here and this is my first post. I looked around a little and found one other thread with a similar question, but the question wasn't really answered. I can't find anything on the net that doesn't confuse me so bad it makes my head hurt, so I thought I'd try asking here. Thanks in...

Native resolution
I just recently bought a brand new computer which forced me to switch from Vista to 7. It wasn't a bad change, just a bit overwhelmed by how things are set up now. The most annoying change is 7 will only give me two options when it comes to screen resolution. 1024x768 and 800x600. Both of...

Native Resolution?
My Monitor is a Flatron W2042TQ that is around a 21" monitor that runs on a resolution of 1680 x 1050. My graphics card is not a gaming one - Geforce 9400GT and I want to play at a lower resolution like 1024 x 768 without sacrificing quality. Is it possible to play it with crisp images on my...

This problem has been going on the quite so time now. This is my 2nd monitor within the year (or so) that this has been going on and it's happened to both monitors. About a year ago (maybe a little less, I can't remember exactly), I saw a Windows Update for my Nvidia GeForce 9600GT drivers. Now up...
