    screen resolution problems

    Hi!

I just installed Windows 7 RC 7100 (a fresh install) on a Dell Dimension 3000 PC (33 GB HD, 2.8 GHZ processor, 1.25 GB SDRAMM) which I bought used. I believe the PC is a few years old. I always set the 23 inch CRT screen to a 32 bit, 1024 X 768 resolution.

The Screen Resolution window has no drop down menu, as shown in the help screen shots -- its frozen at one setting (around 468 X 600). When I go to Advanced Options, then Monitor settings, I can get a choice of resolutions, but all except a 468 resolution at 16 bits horribly pixilate the screen image.

I've never had any problem with desired settings from this PC when using XP. I also found that the PC's hardware doesn't support Aero -- could the video card or a driver be the problem?

    Any suggestions?

    Dave

    screen resolution problems

I'm not an expert at these things but according to what I found on my PC, I have:

    "Standard VGA Adapter"
    "Generic PnP Monitor"

I saw no video cards listed in the device manager, but the Dell site states that for Dimension 3000...

    "No AGP/PCI-E expansion slots"
"Integrated Graphics with 64 MB Shared Memory"

...yet on other Dell forums, I have seen members saying they have as many as 3 PCI slots for the same model PC.

I hope this is helpful. I will also try to get a more computer-savvy friend look at the PC.

    Thanks,
    Dave

You have not installed drivers for your integrated graphics chip, as your display is listed as "Standard VGA Adapter"

Open Windows Update and check for updates to see whether you get any graphics drivers via Windows Update.

I searched on the internet and have found your computer's user manual from here:
    Documentation

In it, your graphics chipset is listed as Intel Extreme Graphics 2 and motherboard chipset as Intel 865 GV.

Unfortunately, there are no Windows Vista drivers and hence no Windows 7 drivers for your graphics card.

You may be able to get by if you install Windows XP drivers from here:
Intel® 865 Chipset Family - Chipset information and downloads

    Hope this helps!

Also, if this does not solve your problem, search the internet for your monitor's drivers as sometimes some resolutions and refresh rates may not be available unless you install your monitor's drivers.

    Cheers!
