Question about the display port on the HD5770

Simple question...but I have no clue as to the answer.

I was considering getting a "display port to hdmi adapter" for the display port on my XFX Radeon HD5770. Will I be able to get audio out of this port with the conversion to hdmi?

If so what adapter would you advise me to purchase to get the best 1080p video and sound?

Edit......

I have another question as well now that I thought about it.

Is it possible at this time to use an "hdmi splitter cable" on the one hdmi port on this card and successfully get a good 1080p audio/video signal to both my Tv and my monitor at the same time?

I know these splitters exits but I have yet to see any good reviews on them. Are there any out there that might allow me to accomplish this?

Hi there,

As far as I know, DisplayPort is an audio/video format so I don't see why it wouldn't work. But why do you need a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter when your video card already has an HDMI output?

The HDMI slot is already in use.

Looking to add another flatscreen HDTV which I already have. Problem is the only inputs are hdmi.

Now I could use a DVI to HDMI cable but I wouldn't get any audio out of it and I am looking to get both.

This would also allow me to get rid of my soundcard and improve the airflow inside my case.

With that said now that I know you can get video and audio out of the displayport does anyone have any recommendations on an adapter?

So far the only adapters out there that I can find that also provide audio are for "mini displayports".

Does anyone know of a "regular" displyport to HDMI adapter that can provide audio as well?

All recommendations are welcome as I would really like to fix this problem.

After reading through this older thread about lack of DisplayPort audio support in Lenovos through 11/09, and this recent article about MacBook Pros receiving Mini DisplayPort audio support in 4/10, I think your best bet is to just buy an adapter, take it home & try it, then return it if it doesn't work.

It's not going to matter which adapter you buy - you're testing your existing hardware. The inconsistency of DP audio support has to do with chipset technology not keeping up with what the DP format was designed to do. If your video card is new enough, it may already be able to output audio through its DisplayPort. If not, you may have to wait for a firmware update or may simply not be able to get audio out of it.

I realize this isn't a real solution, but hopefully it will save you the trouble of hunting around for the proper adapter when that's not the crucial element here.

Cheers,

Just found this page detailing the Catalyst 9.12 Hotfix:
Quote:
The ATI Catalyst 9.12 Hotfix features:
Support for DisplayPort audio
Added support for DisplayPort audio for DisplayPort panels
so if you're using Catalyst 10.4 you should be good to go. Find yourself a DP->HDMI adapter w/ a return policy, and give it a try!

Hi GhostRaider,

in a multi‐display configuration where both HDMI/DisplayPort audio ports are enabled, only the primary display will provide the audio. The card only has one audio chip and Windows can only support one default audio device at a time, so if it did enable audio on both the HDMI & DP, it would be the same audio stream. nVidia has the same limitation.

Edit: sorry, but the use of HDMI splitters isn't supported either. The card needs to be able to detect what device is connected in order to give you the correct resolutions available and to be able to set the correct timings for that given resolution.

Hi Rik55! Thanks for the input. What has been your experience with DP/HDMI setups? Have you used any adapters as GhostRaider is considering doing? I have an HD 4850 as well but it doesn't have both outputs on it so I can't comment...
