Driver Crashes when Dual Monitor is turned off

Ok, This is a new one to me and only started happening after I installed Windows 7.

I have an Asus laptop running a geforce 9650M GT.

I just installed the latest drivers as well.

I am running dual monitor, the primary being my laptop monitor and secondary a stand alone monitor.

My laptop is now stuck to my desk because any time I either disable the second monitor or unplug it to take my laptop anywhere my computer becomes very sluggish and I start getting this error every minute or so.

Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

I don't know what else to try. It's like the driver is constantly looking for that second monitor and freaks out when it can't find it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you have a corrupted driver. Use Driver Sweeper to completely remove your nVidia graphics drivers, and then reboot to install the latest version.

Thanks for the reply. I did what you suggested

Install Driver Sweeper and ran to remove nvidia display drivers
Installed Latest Drivers.
Turned off second monitor. Driver didn't crash this time, but windows just locked up. Same feeling though. PC started getting sluggish after 10-15 seconds of turning off the second monitor.

I tried drive sweeper then installing the driver without the second monitor attached. Did the same thing after driver install reboot. I try unplugging the second monitor while windows is running, few seconds the driver crashes. I see the PC start to think about it and if I plug in the second monitor it's happy again.

It's the strangest thing I have seen. Maybe I should post on nvidia forums too.

What happens if you unplug the monitor and then reboot?

Same thing, windows boots up fine and after a few seconds either locks up or or I get the the driver crashed error message every minute or slow.

The computer works perfectly with two monitors. I never have any issues.
