I have tried using HDMI as well but the picture is very grainy... With VGA on Windows XP the picture was perfect but when I try HDMI on XP and 7 the picture is horrible... Is there a fix for that or no?
It's like being stuck b/w a rock and a hard place... Windows XP perfect picture or Windows 7 and not so much.

It depends on the manufacturer and whether it is a 7080i/720p TV or true 1080p. I had two Visio 1080i/720p LCD's that were 1366x768. A friend of my just bought a Sharp LED that won't go past 1600x1200 in PC mode but will go to 1920x1080 when in TV mode.
I am using a Samsung 40 inch that in PC mode will go 1920x1080 under Windows XP and Windows Vista but not Windows 7. In Windows 7 it will only go to 1600x1200. If you use the HDMI, it will go to 1920x1080 but the fonts look grainy.
To make matters worse, some actually can handle modes that the manufacturer doesn't even report. I found that early on when I bought my first 1080i/720p TV's. The key words are 'supported mode'.
I suspect that it's neither a graphics driver problem, nor a hardware problem with the TV. From what I can tell, the problem most of us are having seems to be in the way the OS is handling the EDID being reported by the TV. I read somewhere that Intel actually had a similar problem and came up with a fix for it. My question is this, what did Microsoft change in Windows 7 that has created the problem? I ask this because you can now run Vista drivers under Windows 7 and they worked fine under Vista, therefore the problem has to be in the OS.
Have exactly the same problem. Was outputting 1920x1080@60Hz from my laptop (ati graphics) via VGA under windows vista. Worked like a charm. Upgraded to Win7, didnt get it to work at all.
Bought a new system and I have the same problem. When I go with HDMI i get a picture, but its overscanned (think that is what its called, black border around the desktop, everything looks like ****). Have tried several different drivers, but nothing is working.
If it is as some people think, that its windows that cant read the tv's instructions properely, when can we hope for a fix?
Gonna try catalyst 9.10 beta now. have a feeling its not gonna work, but ill report back.

All play and no FullHd makes flax a dull boy
As far as I can tell right now, the only option is to use the HDMI. However, you may need to play with the DPI settings to get you fonts looking half-way decent and will probably have to turn off monitor sleep mode to keep the monitor from loosing signal complete.

I have a friend who has a PC with following specs:
Windows 7 RC Build 7100
Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4770 with Catalyst ver 9.8 (or 9.9 he doesn't remember)
Samsung 2233SW with native res. 1920x1080.
He is able to get 1080 res. with just a DVI cable.
Just thought to share it here.
i've got an hd4890 and a samsung 2494hs.
i've had 1920x1080 over dvi with no problems at all, and i've tried three or four different windows 7 builds, and three or four catalysts.
no problems with graininess nor waking up - i must be lucky. :)
DVI to DVI obviously as HD 4770 does not have a VGA port.
No noise problems whatsoever and power management works great as well.
I think from what has been posted, try your friend's monitor or your friend's card.
If one works, the others the culprit. Then try the same at your friend's place and eliminate the faulty part.
