Speaking of heat on ATI cards ....

I was actually wondering if they were even worth they extra money fro the Vapor-X lines (or Toxics)
After seeing what others have reported on temps from Ref. type cooling, perhaps they are worth they extra price.

Not sure what typical temps are for a 4890, as I have only had the Vapor-X version but ..

My 4890 usually runs at about 55-56C at Idle.
Under Full Load, Mid-High 60s. Ive never seen it over 70C.

Thats with a very mild OC.
    860/1025 from the stock 850/975
So just curious, does this seem as if the Vapor-X cooling is worth the extra money?

Read a review Tomshardware on the Nvidia 460 preformace and specs look pretty good still a little pricy though.Fabe
    THG isn't a reliable resource.

No, my Radeon HD 5850 has stock cooling. I got it the day the 5800 series was released. It idles about 35C and barely hits 65C under load. It's also whisper quiet.

@ kylehimself.... what games? is your 4890 showing it's age in??? I don't think there's a game out today that the card has problems with, even though it's not DX11.
It depends on game + resolution + setting.

When mine met BFBC2, Just Cause 2, etc it cried...

(I'd been spoilt by crossfire eyecandy by then - max details, x8AA etc)

However, now that I'm using Eyefinity - I lose all that extra candy (NO AA) and smooth frames...

    Oh, the irony...

I used custom fan profiles - iirc, 32% fan idle about 46-48c, 45-50% fan never broke 90c with an OC of 930/1230 (???) (can't remember )

Different games place different loads - the difference can be as high as 20c+ on some titles. But around 65-70c during summer seems about right.

The Vapor-X's do run cooler and quieter though.

Hmmm....looks like my waiting may pay off. I was on the fench as to whether to upgrade my 4890 or wait and see what's next on the horizon as the 5000 series seems to have issues.

    Thanks

I have a Radeon HD 5850. I haven't had a single problem with it and I got it when it was released.

same here, even rockin a 3 monitor setup with a ton of profiles

Those are some pretty good temps as mine runs about 61 idle, 80ish load. This is at stock settings, and after replacing the thermo compound with Artic Silver MX-3.

At any rate I'll be looking to upgrade the video card once ATI releases the new line-up. It's the only thing left on this new system :)

@ Luckystar.... even though I've never owned an nivida anything, I'm quite sure they're doing just fine with their newest releases, mainly the 470 & 480. They're not ready to roll over yet.
True, but does hit home a bit. Especially when ATI have a 2 Gig card and nvidia has'nt yet.

I will just have to keep saving for that 480, just wish it had at least the same amount VRAM i have now with my 275.

    Lucky
I'm not going to turn this in to an Nvidia vs ATI thread, but it's the first time that ATI have come ahead of Nvidia in as long as I can remember and people think it's the beginning of the end for Nvidia.

VRAM isn't everything. Chances are you won't even being using all that VRAM. Both companies just make their cards differently. Like ATI pile up the VRAM and GPU cores, while Nvidia keeps the VRAM and cores down, but does the shaders differently.

lol, the 6xxx series will have their own issues - it's ATI man
All graphic cards has issues for someone. That counts for nvidia too
I've had 3 nvidia and 1 ati so far and haven't had a single problem with any of the cards or the drivers.

Think? Maybe about dropping their prices but that's about it. They already have the next generation planned around the corner.
