ATI HD 6000 Series GPU's

Speaking of heat on ATI cards ....


I was actually wondering if they were even worth they extra money fro the Vapor-X lines (or Toxics)
After seeing what others have reported on temps from Ref. type cooling, perhaps they are worth they extra price.

Not sure what typical temps are for a 4890, as I have only had the Vapor-X version but ..

My 4890 usually runs at about 55-56C at Idle.
Under Full Load, Mid-High 60s. Ive never seen it over 70C.

Thats with a very mild OC.

So just curious, does this seem as if the Vapor-X cooling is worth the extra money?

It depends on game + resolution + setting.

When mine met BFBC2, Just Cause 2, etc it cried...

(I'd been spoilt by crossfire eyecandy by then - max details, x8AA etc)

However, now that I'm using Eyefinity - I lose all that extra candy (NO AA) and smooth frames...

I used custom fan profiles - iirc, 32% fan idle about 46-48c, 45-50% fan never broke 90c with an OC of 930/1230 (???) (can't remember )

Different games place different loads - the difference can be as high as 20c+ on some titles. But around 65-70c during summer seems about right.

The Vapor-X's do run cooler and quieter though.

I have a Radeon HD 5850. I haven't had a single problem with it and I got it when it was released.

same here, even rockin a 3 monitor setup with a ton of profiles

True, but does hit home a bit. Especially when ATI have a 2 Gig card and nvidia has'nt yet.

I will just have to keep saving for that 480, just wish it had at least the same amount VRAM i have now with my 275.

I'm not going to turn this in to an Nvidia vs ATI thread, but it's the first time that ATI have come ahead of Nvidia in as long as I can remember and people think it's the beginning of the end for Nvidia.

VRAM isn't everything. Chances are you won't even being using all that VRAM. Both companies just make their cards differently. Like ATI pile up the VRAM and GPU cores, while Nvidia keeps the VRAM and cores down, but does the shaders differently.
