Hi Tony, welcome to Seven Forums... If you want to install xp, you really want to format your drive before attempting the install... You can download Killdisk to do this.. Then you want to look at this tutorial to make sure that you have properly slipstreamed your SATA drivers .... How to Slipstream SATA drivers into Windows XP setup CD Let us know if you need more help..

I talked with another HP tech and this is what they say...

    [Tuesday, July 27, 2010 6:25 AM] -- Durga Rao M says:
Tony, for few models, there will not be an option to disable the SATA in the BIOS.

[Tuesday, July 27, 2010 6:25 AM] -- Tony Hunt says:
i know thats why i need another way to disable it

    [Tuesday, July 27, 2010 6:26 AM] -- Durga Rao M says:
So, now in order to install the XP operating system, we need to download and install the ICH 9 SATA drivers.

but i need to be able to see my installation screen to be able to install these drivers correct? i get nothing but a black screen... tested all of my hardware everything seems to be fine... its driving me crazy ive tryed everything i can think of. there support doesnt know what to tell me exept "we recommend you reinstall the vista OS".

Windows 7 makes a 100 MB partition on the hard drive for system files and I suspect this is what is preventing the install of xp. I recomend using the Win 7 Installation disc to remove the 100 MB partition and any other partitions for that matter and make the entire drive unallocated space. To do this boot from the Win 7 install disc and choose custom install, when you see the drives, choose "drive options" and delete each partition on the drive until it all shows as unallowcated space, do "not" create new partitions or format the drive. At this point you are done simply abort the install by closing the windows using the "x" in the upper right hand corner. Windows will ask if you are sure you want to quit, click yes. Replace the win 7 disc with the xp disc and reboot.

No I'm not gonna convince you to stick with vista but, why do you want to use XP?

On my old laptop, the same thing happened and I was unable to install windows XP
