One last thought is to have one of your friends come by with a USB stick and see if he/she has the same problem.

Thanks for trying to help. I am just not good enough with computers to fix this myself. Guess it is off to the geek squad.

It could be just a bad monitor. Any of your friends have one to bring over to check it out for you!
It was something in the power setting. I believe selective usb shutoff was enabled and they changed it to disabled. I have no idea how it changed itself. They checked for a virus and didn't find one.
