    Very sloooow USB 3.0 transfer times


    This is a new build PC, Windows 7 64bit, native USB 3 support on motherboard (Asus P6X58D-E)

    Yes, I checked the Bios and it is enabled and on. I just updated the USB 3.0 controllers. But I am getting very slow (like 14MB/ sec transfer times). This is to a 7200 rpm external drive connected to the mobo supported 3.0 port. Another 7200 rpm external drive connected to the USB 2 port is giving me 22-24MB/sec transfer rates. Both drives are freshly formatted, using same folder of digital photos. I am allowing some time to pass, not going by the initial windows estimated time.

    Anyone know why I am getting slow transfer times?

    have you checked this device on usb2?

    Now I just deleted the volume and re-initialized the external disk, transfer speed has jumped.
    I initialized it over the USB 3 cable just for kicks. I don't know why, but now averaging 45MB/sec for the same block of data. Its faster, but not really mind-blowing speed - doesn't beat SATA, that's for sure.

    same drive in a USB 2 case gives me 24 MB/sec

    Are you using a UBS 3.0 hard drive dock?

    What size are the files?

    My SATA USB 3 dock is fast.

    What make and model hard drive is in the enclosure? If this is lots of small files, your transfer speeds will slow down considerably....versus moving 1 big ISO file.

    Drive is a Diablotek, incidently, looks exactly like a NexStar case, must be same OEM making both enclosures. Anyways, I am moving a ~10GB file of photos, most photos are camera RAW files 15MB each, approx.

    Just tried a 3GB ISO and am getting 80-90MB/ sec transfer rates.

    Well, if you are seeing 80-90MB/sec with a large file sounds like it's working just fine. That's about the most you are going to get out of a 7200RPM drive...regardless of how you connect it.

    I don't know why redoing the initialization of the drive in the case and over the USB 3 cable made such a difference, but it seems to be fine now. Thanks all.
