USB cannot be removed

Hi everyone,

I got this problem recently.

I try to remove the USB drive, but when I click on the icon on the tray, nothing shows up.

So, I try to open device and printers, it loads for a long time, until now, it is not loaded yet.

I also try to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" and when I try to stop the device, I got "The...device is not removable and cannot be ejected or unplugged."

Any idea what happen?

Hi jemping,

A few ideas
  1. What sort of USB port are you using? e.g USB 2.0 and what format is it? e.g. NTFS
  2. Is the drive encrypted? Are you using any other encryption? e.g. bitlocker (just yes or no is ok)
  3. Uninstall your USB ports via device manager and then reinstall them by searching for new hardware. You may also consider removing the USB entries located in the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services before you reinstall the usb device ports (but please right click and export a back up copy before you do).
  4. Do a complete virus scan of your computer including all attached USB drives to ensure that the device is not being forced open by a virus
  5. Check the event log for additional information
  6. Run the system file checker to ensure that all windows files are correct (not corrupted or replaced). Particular we are interested in the windows filter driver as this reads the drive and looks for the 'bit' that tells us if it is removable or not.
  7. Have you used any 3rd party software to make the drive a local disk? Some manufacturers offer this with their USB drives e.g. Hitachi

Additional
  • To open the Registry editor type REGEDIT in RUN or SEARCH and press ENTER
  • To open the device manager type devmgmt.msc into RUN or SEARCH and press ENTER
  • To open the Event Log type eventvwr.msc into RUN or SEARCH and press ENTER

If you'd like a step by step guide on anything I've mentioned then please let me know and I'll happily write one for you.

Good luck Jemping

The thing is that the icon on the system tray for the safely remove device is not working at all. When I click it, nothing shows up.

1. USB 2.0
2. No

As for now, I'm running system file checker to see if anything is wrong, and System File Checker finds nothing is wrong.

Sounds like a missing or changed registry value. When did you first notice the problem? If you have any system restore points still remaining from when the right click to eject option worked try rolling the system back.

Okay, so days ago, I remembered that I installed bluetooth USB driver.
Could that be the root of the problem?

Does this situation persist after a reboot? The "Safely Remove Device" function just insures that no files on the USB device are open and that all cached writes have been written to disk. If you are certain no apps are accessing files on the device and there is no write activity it is safe to remove the device regardless.

The thing is I cannot even call up the safely remove device.
The icon is on the tray, but when I click it, nothing comes out. Usually, a list of removable devices will show up, but this time, nothing shows up.

Even left and right clicks have no effect on the icon.

Too bad you don't have any points available since this is too much registry there. That's the only thing that controls how that works just like any other sys tray icon with a right click menu.

Now here's something that could help. How to remove it! The guide points out the very same registry value you need there which is modified by the guide seen at How to remove the Safely Remove Hardware Icon

Ah, it was solved
I removed the bluetooth registry entry, and I can click on the safely remove device from the system tray, which cannot be done previously.

Plus, I can see device and printer now.
