external monitor won't work

I have Asus N61jv laptop with win7 home premium and want to connect my Eizo s2031w monitor to it. I use HDMI to DVI cable for digital connection. when I turn on the laptop, the "windows is starting" screen appears on external monitor, laptop monitor is black. but when win7 starts, only laptop screen is working and I can't get the Eizo to show any picture at all. simple winkey+P has no effect, nor has Fn+F8. also with graphic card settings there is no external monitor option enabled.

The laptop has both intel graphic accelerator and Nvidia graphic card and somehow switches between them for better battery life, so maybe problem is there?

When I connect the monitor via analog connection, all works good.

thanks for any ideas!

yes, I've installed both latest Intel and Nvidia graphics drivers from here: ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-
still, all I get on screen of external monitor is "starting windows" screen, then it goes black

I did, only monitor I can see there is Generic PnP Monitor. I can right click on -monitors- and select -check for hardware changes-, then it does -searching for Plug an Play devices- but nothing happens.

this laptop has both Intel and Nvidia graphic card, when I turned off Intel card in device manager, all turned black. I had to hard restart the computer and when it rebooted, suddenly image was on the external monitor only! however, in low resolution, control panel in Win was not sleeky-shiny but solid grey and computer worked very slowly.

when I connect monitor via analog, all works fine. I plug in and in two seconds I have image on both laptop and external screen. Just what is wrong here??

I am sorry about this problem your having.

1. What is your analog connection?

2. Do you have a Nvidia control panel? If you do, there is a setting in that to select dual monitors.

When you boot up and the logo is there means there is a solid connection. Let me know.

1.analog connection is classical VGA-VGA conector. It works fine, all with recognizing the monitor and showing its correct name in control panel.

2. There is Nvidia control panel,it has two main sections: 3D settings and video settings, but no dual monitor option. There is also Intel graphics control panel and it has "multiple display" setting, but the only option available is built-in monitor.

I was just wondering, since the Eizo monitor is about 4 years old model, could the problem be that HDMI sends out some newer type of signal, which Eizo is not capable of handling? If so, is there anything I could do about it?

Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it very much!

I really think your graphics card can't support hdmi connection. I don't see why that would have anything to do with your monitor. I believe its your graphics card handling the hdmi connection and it won't work with that kind of connection. You could try a straight dvi cable. If that works, then its graphic card issue supporting the hdmi.
