    Samsung hard drive acoustic management

    Hi

I have downloaded Hard Disk Sentinel and one of the options in this is to change the acoustic management of the hard drive when I change this to the recommended setting which it says is (FEh) as soon as I apply this change it reverts back to the default setting which is min performance and volume (80h). Does anyone know of any other software that allows me to change it to )FEh) to get the best performance out of the drive?

Hard drive is a Samsung HM500JI

    Many Thanks

Offhand, I'd guess that only Samsung software can do that on a Samsung drive.

I'd also guess you are operating the software incorrectly, but I could be wrong. I haven't looked at that type of software in several years.

You might be able to force things back to a default with a jumper setting?

Samsung drives are known to be very quiet, so I think you are on the right track in leaving it on the high performance setting--the drive will probably be quieter than most even on the "noisiest" setting.

    Hi

    Thanks for your replies,

I've had a look at the drive specs on Samsung website and there is no mention of AAM

    http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...9&model_cd=446

I have also attached a picture of the programme that recommends running the HD at its max performance but has soon as I change it to what it suggests it just defaults back to min performance.

    Any ideas would be great.

    Thanks

Samsung website says you must use an app called "HUTIL" to configure AAM.

    Look here:

    SAMSUNG

    and here

How Can I Control My Hard Drive's Noise Level?

    and here

SAMSUNG Hard Disk Drive - support - utilities

Note that in the last link, your particular HD is NOT listed.

That may mean it cannot use AAM.

Or it may mean that you need to use SHDIAG, per the sentence at the bottom of the last link.

But SHDIAG seems to be for older Samsung drives.

It's odd that your exact model number is not listed among the drives for HUTIL, although there are many "HM" drives shown.

It may be that your drive cannot use AAM. I would contact Samsung support and ask about HUTIL for the HM500JI.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply

I tried the HUTIL tool before and got error below

I'll contact Samsung and see what they say about the error message. Its just odd that in the picture I listed above it recommends running the hard drive at max performance but as soon as I make this change it reverts back to to default setting.

    I looked at that image.

    Something about a Ramdrive.

Might the ramdrive be interfering and can you work around it?

But, more importantly, your particular drive is NOT listed on that HUTIL page, so I'd assume you cannot use HUTIL or AAM unless Samsung specifically tells you otherwise.

Who makes "Hard Disk Sentinel" and why are you using it? Is it a Samsung tool? If not, I'd avoid it like the plague.

    Hi

    Thanks for your reply.

Its not a Samsung tool software I found on this link Fault Finding - Internal Hard Disk Drives

I was using it to see if it could change AMM settings.

I'd avoid that tool and use only Samsung tools for anything other than simple hard drive testing.

I have no idea if you have permanently done any damage or can undo anything you have done.

My only suggestions would be tech support at Samsung or tech support at Hard Disk Sentinel.

    Hi

Not sure what you mean by I might have caused damage to the hard drive the Samsung error happened before I installed Hard Disk Sentinel. I have now removed that software.
