My only problem. HD transferring
I finally joined after lurking around trying to google my way out of my problem. I really need to speak with humans about this.
I have two hard drives, both WD, a blue 250 and a black 500. If I go to transfer something off my C drive to my E drive it'll go for about 3 seconds then hang. Sometimes I can cancel out and save myself a hard reset. Most of the times I have to hard reset when it freezes. My big problem is the fact that I cannot transfer files to my secondary hard drive. The thing that really pisses me off is that sometimes once in a blue moon it works just fine. I had it going about a month ago where it would transfer slowly (10-15 Mbs) but at least it kept going. It will not transfer at full speed like I'd really want it to. I've ticked any box I can, I've found no reliable way to jiggle the handle on this problem. I turn every extraneous process off and it still freezes. This problem wasn't always present. I installed Mass Effect 2 and Fallout 3, both fairly hefty games on it and I can play with no huge system freezes. Fallout 3 is a little crash happy but I'm sure that has more to do with the game than the HD. I was able to install Dragon Age onto it and in 29 hours of playtime it has only crashed 4 times and they were all run of the mill "not responding" crashes. I can watch video that is already on the second hard drive with no problems even 1080p stuff. Basically if it's already on it I can use it, but the second there is any movement from one HD to the other it's a crapshoot. I've found that I can download files to the second hard drive from the internet but I can not do any other task or risk a freeze and data loss.
I'm not crazy am I? A drive that's dying wouldn't let you use it this heavily right? The only thing that seems to be an issue is the fact that I can't move something from my main to the second HD. I can run the thing ragged playing top of the line games but the second I go to move some mp3s from My Documents it dies.
I notice that when I get the transfer progress bar going it'll have an abbreviated path listed and the stuff I'm transferring will usually have an extra bit added "library-ms" at the end. I've made sure folders have that read only thing ticked off in their properties.
Installing or transferring things from a DVD straight to the 2nd HD is also a crapshoot but I don't do that as often.
Here's the meaty part. I'm fairly sure I've narrowed the problem down. In event viewer, every time the transfer fails I get these two entries.
Warning: Event 129, nvstor. Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort1, was issued
Error: Event 11, Disk. The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1
These seem to be pointing to something involving nvidia shit which is what my mobo has nforce as the onboard deal. Now what has confused me is the whole Raid thing. Isn't that for servers and stuff like that? I just want an extra hard drive that actually functions. Both drives are OEM from Newegg brand new. The mobo is fairly old but other than this file transfer problem I can not complain about this PC. It's just so frustrating to not be able to figure out what to do.
I've gone into the device properties and turned write caching on and off and neither of the settings gave me any change. I've heard talk of upping my north bridge voltage but I can not find any option that allows me to do that. There aren't any overclocking options in the bios or within the OS. It just seems like I'm missing options that should be there. I've uninstalled the 2nd HD and restarted, nothing doin'. I've heard that after a few hard resets your HD will switch from DMA to PIO (or whichever one's faster) I cannot figure out a way to change this option however.
Can anyone understand what is happening here and what I can do to fix it? The first few weeks the problem happened I opened my case and checked all the connections and have done sata slot musical chairs. When I built the computer I put Win7 on the second hard drive so I could see it in My Computer then deleted it after I didn't need it. Should I have it installed on my secondary?
I'd REALLY rather not format or go through any extreme razing because overall I can live with this level of usability. I'm not gonna be happy about it but it'll do.
