    kithui,
He has indicated that he had deleted a partition. The approach to recovering is different when a partition has been deleted which is why some of the recognized products in this area have been suggested to him.

I never said I deleted a partition. Heres the story.

My computer came with xp on it, when 7 came out I installed 7 on a seperate partition and then eventually deleted the xp partition, but before doing that all my family photos that were on the xp partition were put on my external hdd. And then said hdd corrupted somehow and windows does recognize it, but it asks me to format, which for obvious reasons I don't want to do. So then I though instead of messing with the hdd I could maybe recover the xp partition and get the photos off of it again, but I think I'd rather just go with recovering straight from the hdd.

Well, I guess I did delete a partition, but I don't necessarily need to recover it. Just me thinking..

    Lanthus,
Disregarding the fact that you have deleted a partition.

You now have files from that partion, from before you deleted that partition on another drive but you can not read the files.

Here is some software that just may help you.

    DISK - RECOVER DELETED PARTITIONS/DATA

Data Recovery Wizard is advanced data recovery software to easily do Format Recovery, Partition Recovery, and Recover Deleted files emptied from Recycle Bin or recover lost data due to software crash, virus infection, unexpected shutdown or any other unknown reasons from FAT/NTFS files system under Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista/2008/Windows 7.

Download the demo versions of Data Recovery Wizard. If you have a disk crash, you will be shown the data you have lost. The demo version of Data Recovery Wizard will scan, analyze and show you the data from your crashed or inaccessible hard drive and you can recover 1 file less than 1 MB by the demo version. In most recovery cases, the demo version of Data Recovery Wizard will find almost all your lost files. Depending upon the type of crash and the extent of damage, you might get up to 100% of your data. However, in some cases where corruption to the disk or critical system attributes is severe then data recovery is limited.

You would require the full version of Data Recovery Wizard to recover the data from inaccessible drive. The demo version gives you a much fairer idea about chances of data recovery from your hard disk before deciding upon the purchase.

if yu hav deledted the XP partition it possible to recover from it.. but it a little complicated procedure... better recover it from the hdd itself.... try accessing your HDD in different machine... may be it can work... n yu can get a backup... if the hdd is stil not recognised, then try changin the USB cable n see.. may be its faulty .....

try these simple steps n let me knw the result... :)

Ok I think I'll try Recuva

kituhi1234, I plugged it into my laptop, because I have had problems with it connecting to my main computer before and connecting it to the laptop worked. This time, however, it didn't.

I know there are a lot of fans of Recuva here (I am one myself), so I'm not trying to talk you out of using it. If it doesn't do the job for some reason, try PhotoRec - CGSecurity. It is specifically designed for that sort of job.

PhotoRec is file data recovery software designed to recover lost files including video, documents and archives from hard disks, CD-ROMs, and lost pictures (thus the Photo Recovery name) from digital camera memory. PhotoRec ignores the file system and goes after the underlying data, so it will still work even if your media's file system has been severely damaged or reformatted.
It's from the same outfit that makes the great software WHS mentioned here:

    whs said:
What is the nature of the corruption. If it is just the MFT, that can be fixed from the mirror.
