If you do a search on Solid State Drives (SSD) which is also listed in Wikipedia, by all technicalities, any system using SATA at this time can use SSD. The performance, however, will vary mostly on the SATA connection, the type of SSD you get and the OS you use.
According to Wikipedia and some tests done by Tom's Hardware Guide and AandTech... Intel so far has pretty good SSD, others have varying results I/O wise. Again, the drawback will be mostly cost, as the biggest SSD is currently in the 250 Gig Range and the range cost is somewhere around 400-500 dollar range.
There are other disadvantages as well, but the biggest one is mostly the cost per gig will be the stumbling point for most people.

Good information, Tom's Hardware Guide and AnandTech are two of the best sites for info on any hardware, IMHO.
The SSDs are getting big now, in the next couple of months the 25nm SSDs should be coming out.
This is reported to double the size for roughly the same price, let's hope so.

This is interesting, the cheapest 'top performing' (among the best performers according to AnandTech) 250GB range SSD is the SATA 6GB/s, which is also the fastest. I think they smell the 25nm coming.

For the average user a 40-60GB boot drive SSD is all they need, excluding single bay laptops, keep your personal data on a HDD.
You can get good ones from $100 to $150, knock off $10-20 for a good sale.

Price -> Size ratio.
For example, you can pick up a 1TB WD Black Edition for around $100 USD.
A 40GB Intel SSD will cost about the same, yet its .. 960GB smaller roughly? Thats a huge difference when it comes to storage space.
(I think these run around $120USD, but you can find sales at times for $100)
This is why many suggest running a SSD with Windows and software on it, and keeping all your Music, Pictures, Videos etc on a spinning drive, possibly games as well.
This is really the only downside IMHO, but they are starting to get a bit cheaper and larger sizes.
