Where to buy a SSD hard drive anyone?

Hi I am going to upgrade my existing 160 gig mechanical hard drive to a flash version, maybe to like 400 gig. They are very expensive but since I am on my laptop 85% of the day (literally) I figure I may as well. Any ideas where a good place to buy it is? I live in Japan so I guess here would be a good bet!!! Also - you reckon I am entering a world of pain swapping the hard drives - not referring to the data of course cause that will be backed up - I mean more with my system being able to support a flash drive? Will the processor be ok with a new hard drive and any other hard ware? Thanks!

I don't think you will find too many here that can point you to vendor in Japan right away due to location. As far as Solid State Drives or commonly called SSDs they are very high priced at the present time and are also quite a bit limited in capacities as well.

The largest presently is about 1tb. The prices however seen for one that size are typically several times what you may have paid for your laptop when first bought new. For a 400gb size drive one OCZ model is seen for $2,250-US at Newegg.com - OCZ Vertex 2 Pro OCZSSD2-2VTXP400G 2.5" 400GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

That's a popularsite and one of the better places pricewise while they wouldn't be able to ship anything to you there. The option for you would to convet that amount into your own local currency and do some price shopping around where you are able to buy from.

The term "Flash Drive" on the other hand refers to a small drive you plug into a usb port also known as pen or thumb drives. If you had mentioned SSD in the title you would have already seen plenty of replies most likely.

my gosh.... That is vv expensive....

maybe a 200 gig would be cheaper - I was sort of hoping to spend like $1000 maximum...... ok....

i found this for $599:

SAMSUNG MZ-5PA256/US 2.5 SATA II Internal Solid State Drive
256 GB SATA II Sequential Access
- Read: up to 250MB/s Sequential Access
- Write: up to 220MB/s Max Shock Resistance: 1500G,
duration 0.5ms Max Vibration Resistance: 20G Peak, 10~2000Hz

---------------------- My current set up is as follows: MS Windows 7 Ultimate
32-bit Intel Core 2 Duo CPU U9400 @ 1.40HGz
2.0GB RAM,
Mobile Intel 4 Series Express Chipset Family

Do you think that the other components can cope with this new 256 gig SSD? Thanks!!!

For reference that's the drive seen at Newegg.com - SAMSUNG MZ-5PA256/US 2.5" 256GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

Generally it has to meet Sata II standards as far as the board is concerned. There are guides even here at SF to look over on SSDs from those who have been running them for a period of time now. SSD Tweaks and Optimizations in Windows 7

Removable Flash Drive Recognized as a Local Disk and not a Flash Drive
I recently purchased a 32 GB San Disk Flash Drive. The security files pre-installed on the drive were junk, and I could not delete them so I formatted the drive to remove them. This cleaned the disk, and it holds data, but I'm not sure if this is part of my problem. I am trying to load my copy of...

Hi, I've got a Win RT 7 Install running and my only problem is that it doesn't see flash drives as drives to install the OS on to. I can see the USB drives for loading a driver so the installer already sees the USB drive but it won't list it for selecting a destination for the OS. So, I'm not...
