    Wifi button install

Hello lovely people. I`ve had my 7535g for 9 months now and after 2 dodgy months at the start all is pretty good.

However, one of the reasons for my getting one was that it came with an upgrade to windows 7. Unfortunately it`s the 32 bit home edition. So not only do I have a reduced version but my system is 64 bit.

Having already suffered and bested the upgrade to 7 before I feel ready for this.

There are a couple of issues that I`ll have tho so I`ve come here for some advice.

The 7535g is pretty standard apart from a user programmable button above the kboard and 3 user buttons to the left.

I found the software to install the programmable one, Launch Manager.
But the other 3, for wifi, bluetooth and backup, were installed by the original acer 32bit upgrade kit. These are the ones I need help with. When used they display a cool icon to notify you that they`ve been activated.

I`ve tried to get help from Acer but all they`ll offer is a set of disks for £50 which contain the original vista setup and no info.

So is there anybody who`s managed to do it out there?

    Here`s hoping, Stoo :)

You are entitled to use either 32- or 64-bit kernel version with your Win7 license, no matter what Acer says. You only need to find a 64 bit installer for your version to clean reinstall from booted installer. It will activate with the Product Key on COA sticker which sometimes requires a robocall to MS to sort actual key from batch on sticker.

If you want to test 64 bit on that machine, you can shrink Win7 to install 64 bit from booted DVD to new partition. It will configure a Dual Boot so you can compare 64 bit up to 120 days: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...-120-days.html

I believe the only way to keep factory utilities like you want is to do an in-place Upgrade from Vista to see if it will carry over. If you have a Recovery partition on the computer you could try running it after backing up a Win7 SYstem image externally to see if an in-place Upgrade from Vista will carry over the utilities as it should. But an in-place upgrade is an inferior install compared to a clean install which can also be done with the Acer Upgrade DVD as we did here on two Acer desktops. And you'd be limited to 32 bit which is all Acer offers apparently for your model.

If you find that the factory utilities cannot be carried over in-place by upgrading to Win7, then I would make the Recovery Disks off the Vista factory install and wipe the entire HD to clean reinstall Win7 in whichever bit kernel you decide upon. WE can help you with that here as it is a speciality.

    Thanx

    Sound advice gregrocker.

I contacted Acer as well but all they has to say was that they don`t recommend me installing an OS that they haven`t supplied. NOT particularly useful seeing as I bought a 64bit machine and they only suppplied me with a 32bit OS!

So unless I can find the drivers for the wifi/bluetooth/backup buttons I`ll try a factory reinstall and upgrade from there instead of a fresh install.

Thanks for your swift reply. Much appreciated.

Has anybody else managed this and found the buttons driver. Please let me know soon.

    Bye for now, Stoo.

    2 things.

First, It is impossible to do an in-place upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit

Second, I believe that in the case of an OEM license it is only valid for the version the PC shipped with, not just HP vs. Pro but also 32 vs. 64 bit. For the record, when I bought the OEM DVD for my machine from Newegg I had to make sure I bought a 64-bit one, it only comes with one DVD. One of the guys in my MW2 clan had a similar situation, a shop built him a machine but sold him 7 32-bit, they told him if he wanted to move to 64-bit he'd have to buy a different license (not to mention they should have done 64-bit to begin with).

First, sorry if I didn't make it clear that you cannot upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit or vice versa without a clean install.

Second, the Win7 EULA gives you the right to use either 32 or 64 bit kernel with each license, and there is nothing the factory can do to deprive you of this right without violating the EULA themselves. Of course this is limited to what the machine is physically able to support, but if it will run the other bit kernel then MS will activate it under the EULA.

    Oh :(

Once again thanks for the info.

As your replies seem in conflict I think I`ll elect to believe that I`m granted the right to a 32bit or 64bit install as I choose.

Am saddened that I`m forced to clean install to move from 32bit to 64bit as I still haven`t managed to locate the 3button info I originally asked about.

Still and all. Maybe I`ll find someone at Acer who`ll help, but I won`t hold my breath.

Going to go ahead with the upgrade none-the-less tho`. Gulp!!

I`ll let you know how it goes, and doubtless need more help and advice as and when.

    Much thanks, Stoo
