Nothing physical has happened to it and the only usb devices i've used recently i had installed a while ago, it's just happened out of nowhere it seems?

The last time I had a computer do that, it turned out that it was losing, then rediscovering its own hardware.

I don't think system log will help you with that.

Try watching device manager to see if anything changes at the moment of the noise. Don't worry if you don't end up seeing anything.

Also, try updating all device drivers to see if that resolves it.

I've tried updating all the device drivers but it says all of them are the most recent etc.

I've also tried keeping an eye on the device manager for any changes, but every time the noise happens the manager refreshes itself so i don't notice in time what has been causing it, but i'll try again!

Same here

I have the exact same problem.

Every minute or so, I get the 'duh-DUH' two-tone sound of a device being unplugged. Then the same again, 3 seconds later (ie. unplugged - not inserted - BOTH times). Just before it, my machine/pointer freezes for a split second.

Hardware: HP Elitebook 8440p, 8GB RAM, MS mouse in the USB and that's it
OS: Windows 7 64-bit

I have had some issues with a USB modem recently - Vodafone E505(?) by Huawei, which royally messed up my USB drivers: if I plug it in, then any USB device inserted afterwards isn't detected. However, I think I may have had this problem before this... just that it's becoming more frequent.

Nothing in any event logs, as far as I can see; annoying; I'd have thought device insert/unplug would be an obvious candidate for logging.

Just to add to that.

It seems it's my mouse. At least, after unplugging and leaving out my MS 'Basic Optical Mouse', the insert/unplug sounds stopped.

So - it was a faulty device after all.
