    Installed new mobo. Need help.

Okay guys, I've been a bit of pain the last few days on the forum here. I posted a thread about my BIOS and fixed the issue myself 20 seconds after.

Anyway, I'm having more issue with my system which I'm going to put them down to the motherboard and I thought I should make a thread where I can post all of the problems because there seems to be a few.

I'm using SIW to monitor my system so assuming this software is doing it's job here is what I've noticed.

    1) Since Installing the new motherboard my CPU temperature has went up. It used to idle at 27C and whilst gaming hit no more than 38C. After the change it was 33C idle and I think topped out at 40C. I replaced the TIM with some Cooler master stuff I had and the temps went up again but I can put the 2nd rise down to the crappy CoolerMaster stuff. Now I'm hitting 33C-47C.

    2) my CPU constantly seems to sit at 117.60W. Surely this couldn't be right. Is it not supposed to drop when not under as much use? I have also noticed my clock speed seems constantly stuck at 3684MHz and doesn't drop.

There is more but I'd like to try and get these two sorted first.

    Thanks in advance.

This may sound obvious, but is Cool&Quiet enabled in the Bios?

Also verify you don't have the power plan set to 'High Performance", otherwise it will leave the Cpu and HT link maxed out.

If it's not set to 'High Performance', and your clocks are staying that high: Go into control panel, system & security, power options, click change plan settings, then 'change advanced power settings', go down to 'processor power management', make sure 'system cooling policy' is active, and minimum power state is 5%.

Post back if that doesn't get you set, this is kind of obvious but worth ruling out first.

Thanks for the reply mate. Cool & Quiet is disabled. Cooling Policy is active but there doesn't seem to be any minimum power state option.

Click that link where it says "Change settings that are currently unavailable", I think the option requires elevated permission. It's unlikely, but possible the minimum power state is set too high.

    Edit:
Enabling Cool & Quiet in Windows 7

    “DO:”
    · C’n’Q must be “enabled” in the motherboard’s BIOS (Note that most BIOS settings disable it by default)
    * For optimal power savings, be sure to also enable C1E and DRAM Power Down in the BIOS
    · The power management scheme/setting must be "balanced" or "power-saver" in the control panel (note that this is the default setting)
    · The motherboard’s BIOS must recognize the CPU that is installed (BIOS status screen will properly display CPU model number upon boot-up)
    * You can verify C’n’Q is working with a utility tool such as “CPU-Z” or “AMD Power Monitor.”

    “DO NOT:”
    · Do NOT Select “Performance” as Windows 7’s power management scheme/setting as it will disable C’n’Q functionality
    · Do NOT manually set the CPU frequency or multiplier in the BIOS. Doing so will lock the processor speed and disable C’n’Q functionality
    · Having an old BIOS that does not properly recognize the CPU may disable C’n’Q functionality (flash your BIOS to latest version)
    · There is NO need to install a separate AMD CPU driver… Windows 7 has the AMD CPU driver built-in already!

Okay mate, I done all that and we seem to be getting there. I've noticed though when I load software the Clock speed shoots straight to 3400MHz, there doesn't seem to be any in between. It's either 782MHz or 3400MHz. Is this an issue?

Edit: I should note that this has dropped the wattage to 16W and the temps have dropped to 27C.

    I'm glad . You're a big bad Power User now I see!

I should add C&Q isn't required, but just a bonus. Your system should be able to adjust clocks without it. This may have something to do with how you OC'd the system, I'd look over all of the settings in the Bios.

Also maybe someone else with a bit more experience Overclocking can step in and advise. I'm fairly certain it's something you've set in the Bios, and we have a lot of OC'ers here many with more experience than me, I just don't have everything memorized and it's likely something simple preventing the system to adjust power states.

Edit: Yeah that's certainly a clue, the system should be able to adjust the multiplyer according to load, the common numbers I see are 800mhz, 2200 and 3,400 naturally.

If it's sitting at 800mhz idle, sounds like you're good to go. Also, those temps are actually 'good' for a PhII 965, especially compared to mine, which is at stock right now.

So, you're certain it's not hitting anything between x4 and x17? There should be some loads where it doesn't need x17, mine often sits well below for simple tasks, I think at 25% load it begins to bump up the multiplyer.

In any case You've helped me out and I really appreciate mate. That's the two main issues sorted, temps are down and clock speed isn't stuck. you've earned some rep!

Thanks again, because when it comes to messing around in the BIOS, I'm not to sharp. Cheers!

Just noticed it hit something like 2400MHz not sure exactly but it flashed up briefly. I think you've well and truly sorted it for me.

As for the temps, prior to changing the mobo I was idle at 27C but I'm going to assume the constant 117W was down to the heat because now it's sorted I'm Idle at 27C and just hit 26C as a low so the temps are great. That also means I should take back my "crappy" comment about the CoolerMaster tim because it seems to be doing it's job just fine.

    Thanks mate!

Great, glad it's working for you. And again those temps IMO are awesome for this Cpu. I idle at 39*c and load 55-62*c, and a friend with a really good cooler idles 35*c and load 52*c, so you're good. I can only hope for temps like that when my new cooler arrives.
