DVD drive is recognized but will not recognize discs most of the time

Hi, I mostly registered so I could get help. I'm sorry if this answer is already answered - point me in the right direction if so, but I have been looking for answers over several forums and some threads were even in THIS forum. So, I decided to post my problem.

I have a HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GSA-H73N so it was manufactured by Hitachi-LG. When I insert a disc - any disc, CD, DVD, audio, software, anything - 90 percent of the time, it just sits there. The DVD drive is there, but it acts as if there is no disc in the drive. I know that the discs work. In fact, once in a while, it randomly decides to work.

I have tried to reinstall the drivers, see if it was working, (there is almost no indication from Windows that it doesn't work) and reboot the computer, but all to no avail. When I decided to download Microsoft Automatic Troubleshooter, it found the problem, but it couldn't fix it. I also have Daemon Tools, if that means anything (although, I had these issues before I installed Daemon Tools). The times the drive worked, it worked perfectly.

In addition, I have read (here: LG DVD Drive not reading disks ) that this is a common problem with LG DVD drives. I was thinking "oh, well that's not me", but then I found out it IS an LG drive...

Thank you for taking the time to read this, and any help will be greatly appreciated!

    Welcome to the forum,

Since you've already tried the fix-it by microsoft I'll skip that suggestion,

    Here's a possible solution,

Thanks for leading me there. I tried the stuff suggested, but it didn't do much. A couple hours later, I stuck a disc in there, and it worked. I stuck another, it worked. I stuck another, but I had to do it 3 or 4 times, yet it worked too. So I'm hoping its fixed, but if it isn't, I hope a patch comes out for LG drives sometime in the future. In the meantime, I may be able to start the computer with Fedora 13 and try that. Thanks again!
