It might need a driver, so it can recognize what is connected.

In my case, in order to detect my HTC Incredible as a set of disk drives, I have to install a specific driver -- which is aggravating because I get the driver install popup every time I connect it. This is true even though I'm connecting via USB and had expected that generic USB drivers would have worked just fine. If I do NOT install the driver, Win7 will not recognize the device.

So, it looks like you will need some special drivers.

I know that the iPhone requires apple mobile device something.

Is your Samsung Android? If so, when you plug it in via USB, you should get a notification in the notifications bar. Pull it down and select a different USB connection type. (Default is charge only) I have no need for a special driver.

I do not know about the Blackberry.

Also, like with Nokia, simply installing the Suite/Manager software installs some device drivers (ODEX, Modem and others). Try installing the software then, when prompted, plug the device in. It's what I have to do with mine
