    Sound stopped working

    Hi,

I have a quite odd problem. I have an Abit AB9 Pro mobo with a Realtek sound chip on it. Earlier today I rebooted my machine and when it came back up Windows told me I didn't have a sound card installed.

I went into device manager and I saw that under "Sound, video and game controllers" that there were 5 NVIDIA Sound devices listed with the exclamation point icon.

I then deleted all of them and had device manager re-scan for hardware changes. It then failed to properly install the drivers. I then rebooted and disabled the audio on the mobo , deleted the devices from device manager, rebooted enabled the audio & let it reinstall. Still nothing working, but now it does show "High definition audio device" instead of the NVIDIA device.

Any ideas on how I can go about fixing this? Thanks for all input!

you wont get these drivers through windows update you will need to go to the nvidia website and search that way.

The problem is that it's NOT an NVIDIA chipset.

It's a realtek chip for audio. Somehow Windows thought it was an NVIDIA chip.

The best I could suggest is to download the relevant motherboard drivers from manufacturer's website.

have you tried to manually download the realtek high def audio driver and install it that way?? it will uninstall old one first then you will need to reboot then hit the realtek installer again to install it.

then find the nvidia audio driver.

    Realtek

Thanks for the link! I really should have tried that first, but I just couldn't get past the fact that it stopped working throught a reboot and I hadn't changed anything related to sound.

Unfortunately, that did not solve my problem. BUT, it did get me to look into it a bit deeper and the "problem" with the device is "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers ... Code 52".

I also see another driver with the same problem that I think should definately NOT have this problem. Under "System Devices" the "Plug and Play Software Device Enumerator" driver also has the "code 52" error.

Any ideas what might have gone wrong to cause this and how I might fix it?
