    Thanks s

    No mate I only had the printer, wireless adaptor for the M/KB, audio jack, router cable.
    Yeh seems like the answers I have been getting form various (many) places anyway it doesn't seem to be causing any probs but it wuld be nice to know wouldn't it? Oh the ext was aWD so I might just try their site - tomorrow again as it's off tp the workhouse again in a minute lol!

    But thanks so much for trying but believe me I am a small fellow (and a Limey he he) and being small just like a terrier dog just can't let go of that rat until it's wrenched from my jaws lol!! Will let you know how I go.

    In addition to UBCD, another good tool for hard drive diagnostics is HDDGURU: MHDD

    That's all I was suggesting, as a last resort. I have an old 10GB Maxtor drive that I've repaired bad sectors on twice now. It's still going strong as a storage HDD.

    Shabbat = Sabbath
    Shalom = Peace
    Today is the Sabbath, and Shabbat Shalom is a phrase that is equivalent to:
    May the peace of the Lord's Sabbath rest upon you.

    OK

    seeker I have just tried the WD 1Tb drive - again last night on the laptop it was still running a backup after nearly 10 hours so am ditching it - it was at 56% - absolutely ridiculous, as the backup on the desktop using a Seagate 500Gb had finished a fair while before I even got up this am.
    I still reckon it (WD 1Tb) was a major cause of the disk errors I was getting - even though I can't ID the Disk1 device I suppose it could have been anything - but the probs from memory started when I first got that drive. So am hooking up a HP Simple Save 350Gb for backup now.
    In hindsight I was probably being a bit of a smart arse buying the tera drive thinking that bigger was better. Plus the device bought from a large "variety" store - Big W I suppose a bit like your Walmart? had packing tape around the bottom edge of the box and I didn't twig (realise / suspect) at the time anything was wrong but I do know that they do get returned goods and just put them straight back out on the shelves - so lesson learned eh? In any case I don't do a lot of photo stuff and the like just music and books and my internal 500Gb is probably more than I am ever going to need for storage of that.

    But I will get into the site you have suggested as well as Davids' if I get any further HDD prbs start up.

    OH and David I meant to mention please don't take my reply to your suggestion that it would enter (my rather impetuous at times) head as that you would put me onto a untrusty site - I only said what I did because I am now in all probability a little overly paranoid re net stuff. I shouldn't be really as my ISS is super efficient at lettting me know of "strange stuff" coming through.

    Query

    Have been doing some reading re hard drive controllers in hubs and the machine and find that they involve circuitry - didn't know - sorry you fellows. I assumed they were just like extension power outlet boards - look you are communicating with the KOTBC!!

    My Harddisk# errors - not my internal C" drive which is numbered 0 (zero) is it possible for the hubs and / or the machines' usb sockets have defective circuitry in them that could possibly be the cause of my problems?

    Seagate drive

    Hello seeker sorry for the late reply - well I think (and hope) that I have the answer for my disk errors. I defaulted my laptop and started from scratch left the machine for a few days bought a new WD external and have done 3 backups and to date no errors.
    So far so good but when I connected one of my older WD externals to the desktop I instantly got disk controller errors so removed it but only by shutting down the machine before I could do that as it would not eject in safe mode. Since then I have just had the Seagate hooked up as my backup drive and no more errors.

    I have to be honest and say that I have found out in the last couple of months that any usb devices need to be "safely" removed whereas I was just unplugging them and plus I have been using downloaded free software by recommendation and thereby not being cautious enough.

    Now both the drives in each machine are showing up as Drive1! and are healthy so must come to the conclusion that I did as above. So all in all I have been a bit of an impetuous smart arse, but am learning quickly with help from folks like yourself. Many thanks for your input I hope you don't think I am completely stupid.

    My only defence is that for years I have just been doing docs, spreadsheets, Ebaying, YT'ing etc without giving it much thought until I decided to get a little deeper into computing.

    Nobody thinks you are stupid. At least they shouldn't. Everyone here has had to learn, just like your doing now. That doesn't make you stupid. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Stupid folks don't seek for answers, or try to aquire knowledge. So that makes you pretty smart in my book.

    Thanks

    Hey David that was very kind of you to say that as I have had some really quite "unfortunate" replies from some really savvy people - not many & not in this forum I might add- who seem to be really irrated by comments or queries I make or ask.
    That makes one feel really insignificant and wary of asking anything.

    If I could I would say thanks in Hebrew but will have to leave it at - Shalom be with you!

    No problem. It needed to be said. I think you'll run into arrogant posters on any technology related message board. It's really quite rediculous when someone who has been through the exact same thing as you [ignorant, but seeking answers] is suddenly a genius, who is above all, and feels the need to belittle those who are currently less knowledgable. That really pushes my buttons!

    Oh, and I'm not Jewish. Messianics don't have to be. In fact, the vast majority of Messianics are Gentiles. Maybe 10% are Jewish, and that's a generous estimate.
