External HDD keeps recycling

Hello all!

I have 400GB external Seagate.

I've checked the USB power options to see if this was an issue- no.
They are disabled.

I wonder if it isn't a time-out inherent in the drive itself?

I don't want it to power down until I shut it off manually.
As is, it keeps shutting down, then spinning back up again.
Most annoying, not to mention that it might be wearing down the drive.

How do I keep this from happening?

Hello rap33042!
If it's not the USB option in your power plan, as you say...I seem to remember, that some drives have an internal "clock" that powers down the drive after a certain phase of inactivity. In that case the on/off switch would have a 3rd setting: "auto".
Set that to "on" and see if that changes anything. how big are the intervals BTW?

SledgeDG:

Sorry, but I can't keep up with you. I don't know what you mean about the "3rd setting".
Are you talking about within the power plan settings?
If you are talking about the power switch on the external drive, then there is no option- Off or On- that's it.

I haven't timed the intervals, but guessing by golly, by gosh, oh gee, I'd say about 10 minutes to power-off, probably less.

Thanks for responding...

yes, I meant a physical switch on the back of the drive...well it was worth a shot.
I only have external WD drives and they too power down after 10 minutes (factory setting)
But they come with some software that lets you (among other things) change the timing or switch off this feature.
They're called WD Smartware on one drive and WD windows Tools on another.
But I doubt they'd work on a Seagate...so your best bet would be to check with seagate's service if they have anything comparable.

Others than that you probably need some application that frequently accesses that drive to reset the internal timer. (perhaps some kind of active folder watch will do)

Hi,

you could try installing the Seagate manager that you can get from here:

FreeAgent | Go, FreeAgent | Desk, FreeAgent | XTreme | Seagate
Then adjust the power setting by using the Manager to "Never". Didn't help me, but who knows, might do the trick in your case.

Recycling Bin is seemingly self-emptying
Of late, I find that if there is anything I have dropped in to my Recycle Bin and I log off, when I log back in again, the Recycle Bin is empty!! This odd behavior began quite recently and I've not found any reference to reversing the way it's getting handled. While others might be happy to have it...

Recycling bin problems.
Ok so this morning i started up my computer as i normally do, and then as soon as windows started up, it displayed a message reading: Recycling bin for drive C:\ is corrupted, would you like to empty it? Naturally i hit yes, but then the message appeared about 10 more times before it finally...

'view' keeps reverting to 'by tiles' in recycling bin.
this isn't so much a problem as just a curiosity. I'm running ShellFolderFix to correct the arrangement problem, and that is still working fine (the dimensions I want recycling bin to have remain the same when I click the desktop shortcut), but inexplicably, after working normally all day (view by...

Recycling old hard drives
After upgrading, I've found that I have 7 IDE hard drives ranging in size from 1 GB (!!!) to 200 GB. I'd like to get rid of them all. Is there a free reliable recylcing service out there. I've already wiped them clean (except for the 1 GB drive which won't spin up. It's from 1994).
