Have you checked that Windows Audio Endpoint Builder service is running? Right click Computer on the right pane of Start Menu, choose Manage. From Computer Management console, choose Services and check the status of the service.
If it's not running, right click the service and choose Properties. Start the service, also make sure you turn automatic start on.

I know this has to be frustrating. I am far from an audio expert. I know you removed iTunes.

You may come to a point that a repair install becomes the only way to get things back to normal.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
If you read the first two boxes on this page this fixes registry errors and restores defaults. Which is what you need or have been trying to do. I didn't think of this yesterday. Sorry.
You will need to run three times to repair everything. It will repair then a window comes up saying it couldn't fix all. Run it again.
It just can't fix everything in one pass. Kind of like trying to defrag in one pass.
It just won't do it. It takes several passes.
Running Option #1 is easiest.

The sfc /scannow command (System File Checker) scans the integrity of all protected Windows 7 system files and replaces incorrect corrupted, changed, or damaged versions with the correct versions if possible.
Warning
Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc/scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state. Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc/scannow.

Repair install. Last resort. Read carefully. That is why I posted the sfc /scannow to try first.
There may be other things to try before this step.

Well a repair is a good option.
Do a Repair installation if:
- A System Restore did not help fix your Windows 7.
- There is no other easier option left that can fix your Windows 7.
- You DO NOT want to do a Clean reinstall of Windows 7.
- You DO want to preserve your user accounts, data, programs, and system drivers.
Have you gone into your BIOS and checked to see if there is an option to enable/disable High Definition Audio on the motherboard?
Dell computers can be quite sparse when it comes to BIOS settings, but it should be there.
I'm just going to throw this out here. I've got to go. We've got a holiday in the States today, and if I don't start wrestling with a rather large bird soon I'm going to end up with mashed potatoes on my head!
In Firefox, Tools > Options > Applications Tab you will see that all the file types are assigned to a particular plugin. On my computer a lot of these are assigned to the Quicktime plugin. One of the things I see a lot is that when you uninstall iTunes it screws up Quicktime also. So it might be worth your while to 1)check those file associations in both browsers, 2)uninstall and reinstall Quicktime or any oher plugin that handles those files, or 3) uninstall and reinstall the browser.
Secondly, I worked on a laptop that lost sound through the speakers any time the Realtek driver was installed (proper driver, from the laptop manufacturer's website). The sound worked fine running on the generic driver installed by Windows. There were 2 solutions:
1) The kid in the big box store, obviously had dealt with this before, started the driver installation and half way through canceled it. It worked! He said something about "enhancements" as the cause.
2) Removed all audio driver software, deleted all audio driver folders, uninstalled the audio device from Device Manager, rebooted, let Windows find and install generic driver. It worked. Can't say this would work for your case.
The other thing I should mention is that whenever you try a solution you should create a restore point before the attempt and go back if the solution does not work. Sometimes you can create a tangled mess trying many possible solutions and you never know if one of them may have worked if you tried it first!
Ok, I did everything you suggested and nada. I finally gave up and had a live chat with Dell. That was a FIASCO! Long story very short, they are sending me a new HD. Makes no sense that it's a hard drive issue, but I did buy as a refurb and I don't know if the HD is also refurb. At this point, I don't care, I just want it fixed. Just waiting for the tech to call and say he's coming. Thanks to everyone who's contributed! Praying that this is finally going to bring resolution.
