Help - Old XP Style Power Standby Wanted

I have have an SSD for my OS and have deliberately turned off "Hibernate" because I don't like the idea of writing the contents of ram to the SSD.

With my old XP system I setup a desktop shortcut to "Standby" which I could conveniently activate by double clicking the "standby" desktop icon. I used to use this "function" quite often.

So does anybody know how Windows 7 can be made to "sleep" without the "Hibernate" feature thats writes ram contents to disk ?

I looked at Win 7's "Power Plans" but I dont see what I am looking for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the link - By trial and error I found that even with Hibernate turned off, Win 7 will support a "sleep mode" - funny, they used to call it Standby in XP. And also funny, I have a bunch of Win 7 books and they don't address this.

Have a bunch of Win 7 books - they all refer to Hibernate and none discuss sleep much although they do discuss the Hybrid mode.

Anyway - I have Hibernate turned off and tried shutting down the computer in "Sleep Mode" the other day - it shut down fine, and "Recovered" to full status instantly when I pressed the power button to turn the computer back on. This is going to sound silly BUT -

But when the computer renewed from the "sleep Mode", instantly, everything appeared all right until, during boot up, my Norton Ghost backup program popped up a window above the system tray telling me that one of my "Backup locations" was no longer accessible. Since I keep some of my backups on my F: Drive, I did a quick check under "My Computer", and all my drives showed up except for the F: Drive.
I know Windows well enough - so I shut it right down, re-booted, and of course the F: Drive is now visible.

I don't know what caused my problem - I guess it will take time to figure out.
But I am still Happy with Windows 7

So for now, I'll make do without the "shutdown" feature that XP used to have, UNTIL I can get it to work without flaws. "Sleep" problems can be caused by a particular hardware configuration - so it may never work right on my machine. :):)
