Change motherboard without reinstall Win 7 x64

    Hey all,

My mobo just failed so I am thinking about attempting a mobo swap without a reinstall.

I found this thread: Change Mobo and Processor without format ? where the OP reported success.

If I can get this working, are there any potential Cons that I should be aware of?

If I do have to reinstall how does the Repair reinstall differ than the Clean reinstall?

I already have all my Personal Files on a separate partition on the HD and I will be using the same processor and RAM. Thanks.

You shouldnt even have to do a repair, just install and see if it identifies everything. Have the latest mobo chipset and integrated stuff drivers downloaded and ready to go if you can. If Win7 doesnt recognize the new mobo then a repair is a 2nd option.

From your specs it appears this is a custom or homemade PC... if so you really shouldnt have any issues!

Will give it a shot and post back. So you recommend downloading the drivers from ASUS rather than letting Win 7 download generic drivers (or wherever Win 7 pulls drivers from) automatically? The reason I ask is that the board I bought was not designed specifically for Win 7. And yes "homemade" all the way. I bought the PC from a friend who wanted to upgrade.

    old board

    new board

    Thanks.

Download the drivers from ASUS to a USB stick'unless the new board came with the drivers on CD. Let windows try to find the drivers first.

So to clarify. If Windows can install the drivers great. If not, have the ASUS drivers on CD or USB as a standby?

You will probably have to install some of the drivers from CD... once win7 knows what you have, updates should be grabbed from the net. Remember to do probably 3 update-reboot cycles after you switch over to make sure you have all updates!
