Half the ram used in windows 7 32bit as compared to windows xp

When running task manager in win xp it doubles the physical memory into virtual memory whereas in windows 7 32 bit, resource monitor & all cpu meter gadget shows only the real amount of physical memory. when my system reaches above 75% of physical memory in windows 7 it crashes, i did clean install from win xp tp win 7 32 bit. there is a pagefile.sys in c drive present in new installation wat its for? is the double top memory feature tuned off in win 7 ? where do i switch it on? or is windows 7 32 bit designed in such a that it only uses physical memory.

Any chance we cold get your system specs so we know what hardware you have?

Ram is ram. whatever you had you have. Win 7 is more efficient at managing whatever you have.

pagefile.sys is the pagefile and Win7 does use it.
Disabling the PF will cause nothing but problems, especially with low amounts of physical RAM installed.

Typically, it is set to 1.5 times the amount of physical RAM. If you let Windows manage it, it will automatically set the value it needs.

With only 1GB of RAM, you are running the official bare Min. requirement Windows 7 32bit needs.

Since windows needs on average 750MB-1GB of RAM just to run, ideally you need at least 2GB.
