    They just said look on the website, and theres step by step instructions for it, but i'm strugging to find them haha

    the remote should control your media center/meia player functions, volume etc, without having to use any type of cable. HP laptops usually have an infrared receiver integrated into the case somewhere.
    the cable is only for controlling separate devices, such as a cable box, tv, dvd player, etc.
    are you speaking of the small thin PCMCIA-slot remote, or the larger "media center" remote with the reciever box?
