Sony? Memorex? Eagle? Verbatim? Datex? Office Depot brand? CD-R? CD+R?

    What media?

He said programs not burners...I've had burners that could read cds/dvds but not be able to burn anything

In my experience these problems are often overcome by going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the latest firmware for the burner.

That's a good brand, and should be working fine. As Ivan and Ex_Brit said, It's likely burner trouble, Try updating the firmware, and if that doesn't work, try swapping burners.
