    Power supply question


    PSU question:
    Is my PSU adaquate for my system? I have an Antec Basiq 500w.

    Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-US2H
    AMD X2 5600+ Brisbane 2.9GHz (dual core)
    GeForce 9400GT 512MB graphics
    Kingston 8Gb DDR2 RAM PC2-6400
    Western Digital RE3 320Gb HD
    Samsung Spinpoint 640Gb HD
    Antec TriCool 120mm fan (as 2nd fan)
    Sony DVD recorder
    LG Blu-Ray/HD-DVD rom, DVD-recorder (GGC-H20LK)

    Computer started having power issues hours after having played a blu-ray movie in it for the first time the other day. The computer would randomly turn off, like it lost power. Sometimes I can get into the OS for a long time, sometimes it would power off as it got to the BIOS screen.

    All the hardware seems to work including every fan, including the cpu fan. The computer does not seem to get any hotter than normal. CPU is not currently being overclocked. There are no BSODs.

    The computer was fine before playing the blu-ray movie. The parts are no more than three months old, and only used for less than a month.

    The computer is plugged into an APC battery backup which seems to work.

    I think so mate it looks like a lot of hardware in there to be powering. I mean each component probably is not drawing much but you do have a lot of hard drives and fans etc etc and 8 gb of ram. I think it would not hurt to have a bit more juice to run your parts.

    Need someone to help me with my issue. Exchanged my psu yesterday thinking the psu was at fault. I'm afraid to install the new one just in case that does not solve the issue. The Antec Power Supply Calculator indicates that my 500w psu should be fine.

    Run it through this, it's pretty accurate for general purpose use.

    Antec uses an identical web calculator...said something about 211w. Can't quite believe that since I'm pretty sure my bd-rom/hd-dvd rom - dvd recoder with lightscribe takes a lot of power. After all, my power issues began hours after I played my first blu-ray movie on it.

    Hi merkat106,
    The other thing that could cause this problem is your battery backup unit.
    Try running your PC with the backup disconnected. :)
