    PC Hardware Problems

About a week ago my PC was infected with 101 pieces of spyware. I removed them all and it still didn't seem to help so I reinstalled Windows 7 on my HP laptop. Now, I am noticing different things going on - the CD drive will only read certain disks but yet it can burn contents to a disk and read the contents it burned. The other thing it just started to do is when I close the lid, the entire PC shuts itself down. The Geek Squad said that it could be a number of things from the motherboard, to the hard drive going bad to a number of other problems.

My question is, does anyone know what would be going on here? It sounds more like a hardware issue to me more than it does a software issue.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

I'm not sure about the CDROM drive, but with the laptop lid, there is often a setting which will power off the laptop if the lid is closed. See if you can locate that setting and if it can be changed. Have a look under the Power Options under Control Panel for that.

Sounds like the hard drive to me or the controler for the hard drive and disk drive is going bad. What is the model and how old is it.

    Hi,
I found the settings for what is supposed to occur when the lid is closed:

    • When I press the button - SLEEP is set for operating on battery power and when charger is plugged in.
    • When I press the sleep button - SLEEP is set for operating on battery power and when charger is plugged in.
    • When I close the lid - SLEEP is set for operating on battery power and when charger is plugged in.

Not sure what else could be causing this.

It is an HP Pavilion dv4 Entertainment PC laptop. It's only a year old.

You need to fill in your system specs so we can see what makes up your computer.

Go to usercp at top of page and down left hand side you see system specs, proceed to fill in as it will help us understand better.

    +1 RST

Go here and find your exact model # then go to downloads and drivers and get the newest driver for the DVD/CD player. Then give it a try.
That way you have the right one.
HP Pavilion dv4-1000 Entertainment Notebook PC series*-* Download drivers and software - specify product name - HP Business Support Center

A bit more info also there are about 300 versions of the dv4 Entertainment listed at the above web page.

Not likely the hard drive since the problem is the CD drive and a software setting.

    Hi,
I could only find so much info about my system in the control panel. I filled in what I could find. I have been to HP's site and did download some driver updates but the updates didn't seem to work.

Will the laptop go into Sleep when you select the Sleep option on the Start > Shutdown menu?

When you reinstalled, did you clean the HD first?
