Windows 7: External Hard drive-advice

Windows 7 Prtofessional

Thank you all who have given me a llittle hope re this external Hard drive.l will install it and follow your instruntions which l have downloaded.Mind you l also have had to instal a new All in One Printer-Canon Pixma MG6150 but than that was easy to do as have done that before-not Canon but an HP (big mistake)As you say you can only try and live and learn but in the meantime l cannot afford to do any mistakes as where l live in the far Country-fairly large Provincial City BUT to get anything fixed re Computers -even to just look at the thing starts at $100 and that is not a home visit,so perhaps you can see why l am extra careful.
At least now l have this Site to scream for help as a similar Site we have in my Country all you get is criticism although on occasion you get some help. Will qualify that-the criticism is levelled when you try and help someone else as it covers not only Computers but Education,Broadband etc so if someone does not like what you put on or try and assist you get an awful lot of 'flack' so to speak.

There is not really much you can do wrong. Plug it in and check whether it shows up in Computer. If not, go to Disk Management, right click on the left pane of that drive and "Initialize". Then right click on the right pane of the drive and define a partition which will automatically include a drive letter.

I would not subdivide it into several partitions. I would use folders and subfolders within one big partition. That is a lot more flexible - unless you have very special reasons to work with partitions.

These things are intended to be "plug & play" which means just plug it in and windows should immediately recognize the device. If it's not turned on or unplugged your computer will just ignore it's existence until it's plugged in again.
Maybe talking to an academic friend who is a bit more comfortable with "technology" might ease your concerns.

Windows Backup Image does not work on my WD USB 3.0 DRIVE

I just bought a WD Mybook Essentials 3tb USB 3.0 external hard drive and ran Windows 7 backup and selected the checkbox for creating an image. The backup runs fine but when it gets the stage where it is trying to creating an image, it quits and says that the backup was not completed. I deleted the backup and partial image and ran it again with the same results.

After researching the web I found a blog that stated that the imaging part of Windows backup is incompatible with this WD disk.

Note for TheHappyMan, above. Have you got it to work, and if so, how?

I am running Window 7 Professional 64 bit.

It's a BIG disk (didn't know you could buy WDs that big).
Most of our computers us a BIOS/MBR combination for booting up the computer. For technical / historical reasons you are restricted to 2TB partitions.
Now it may be if you partition your disk into say 3 x 1TB partitions.
Try using Windows own disk management to do this first.
free Partition Wizard
and try

Everything may work then.
