Can windows 7 damage a motherboard?

    Hey guys:

I was running Windows 7 bld 7077 a while back. Shortly after I loaded it. I had the blue screen of death pop up and it said that something attempted to write to a rom area? After that, I lost 3 of the 4 memory slots on the mobo. I have just replaced the mobo and all is fine. Do you think that Windows 7 had anything to do with it or could it have been just bad timing? A coincidence if you will.

I am running the Asus P4C800-E mobo socket 478 with a 3.4 Extreme chip. I was playing around with putting the page file system(virtual memory) on my G:\ drive.

I would love to load it up again and test it out, but I don't want to blow up another mobo.

    Thanks

    Welcome to Sf, jwmghf.
I myself have never seen an OS kill a mobo by itself before. The only thing I can think of was some type of virus in the build you had. If you grab the RC from microsoft website you know that you will be safe.
Im thinking it was all a fluke that your mobo went south when you installed Win7.
    I hope this helps.

I owned that board for years and it's a solid board. I can't see how an OS install would hurt it unless you consider that 7 will push your system somewhat harder than perhaps XP. Either way, I know from experience that that board has no issues with 7.

The OS should not hurt your MoBo. However, I read that there are some malware/viruses that will write to your bios and destroy your MoBo. Just to be on the safe side, you should password protect your bios so that it cannot be updated without your permission.
