Turning modem and router off at night
Does anyone know of a study that shows if it is better to turn your modem and router off every night?
Thanks
Does anyone know of a study that shows if it is better to turn your modem and router off every night?

I always turn mine off at night. I have my system plugged into a 6-way surge protected socket, so when I turn the power off to that everything is also powered off. I have no issues with this, and my router works normally. In fact, when I power back up I find that the router is usually ready with a connection by the time I have reached my desktop.
I have three people connected to my router and I never know when they'll need an internet connection, so, in my case, it never gets turned off.
In fact, it's been "running" for about five years now with no problems.
no studies that i'm aware of - maybe we can start our own?
make a poll - who does and who doesn't turn it off? although thinking about it, that won't answer your question.
'better' in what way?
advantages
not using electrical power (not very much used anyway) - save a tiny bit on bills, and modem/router maybe runs a bit cooler, so may live a bit longer - but probably not
if you also disconnect from phoneline each night, i suppose you're safer from being fried by a thunderstorm
disadvantage
you aren't connected 24/7 - maybe you don't need to be, but i'm a bit of an insomniac and like logging on in bed with my netbook at 3am sometimes. plus my router is pretty slow at booting and synching up, and i don't like waiting around for it.
I can give an honest for sure answer on that and the answer is, "I don't know." I am with Time Warner. When the technician came to get everything hooked up, he said I should leave my modem on constantly. I didn't ask him why, but I wish I would have. I would like to turn mine off at night during the summertime when we could have a thunderstorm. But since Dwarf turns his off owith no problems, I may start to do it. Does anyone have an answer as to why the guy from Time Warner told me to leave mine on?
i leave mine on so i've got instant internet access with any of my computers, without having to worry if my router is on or not.
pure convenience and laziness i guess.
My modem has a "standby switch" on top that effectively disconnects the PC from the internet. I use that when my PC is unattended and not downloading something, or the PC is off. The router is always plugged in, as is the modem, but the modem is in standby. Want to go online, just press the standby switch again and you are connected. This is more of a always on connection thing. I have firewall and the NAT firewall in the router, but prefer that there is no internet connection when I don't need one. A Guy
I leave mine on. This way I keep the same IP address and continously renew the one that I currently have.
I'm 24/7 - because my router and at least one of PC's is 24/7
