Windows 7: stupid keyboard problem

stupid keyboard problem

A stupid and annoying problem just started.
All was perfectly working until 20 minutes ago - I opened Microsoft Word and I noticed I could use the ctrl+shift+left/right arrow to jump and select words; funny fact is that the combinations ctrl+left/right and shift+left/right work just fine. I then checked and this extends to other applications. Besides, the combination ctrl+alt+del won't work - unless i activate sticky keys and press one at a time.
I tried reinstalling the keyboard and it remained the same. I checked sticky keys and the such, but all seems fine.
Any suggestions? I don't think it matters that much, but I am using windows 7 ultimate 32 bits

Assuming your keyboard is USB, is it plugged directly into a USB port on your motherboard, or is it plugged into a hub, monitor port or extension cable? If so, plug it directly into a mobo USB port and see if it helps. Other than that try restarting your system. I suppose there's always the chance that your keybporad is going bad.

Hi James!

It is connected directly to the motherboard. I tried changing the port, and a system restore but none of that yielded any positive results.

I noticed, when I open the on-screen keyboard, that when I press one shift key it highlights both as if I was pressing both; the same happens with the ctrl key.

I just thought that if it was the keyboard's fault they simply would not work properly. But in this case, they work fine by themselves, they are just not capable of working as a team hehe All shortcuts using shift or ctrl alone are working fine (shift+arrows, ctrl+tab, ctrl+v/c, ctrl+f4, etc...), I just can't use them together (ctrl+shift+arrows, ctrl+shift+del, ctrl+shift+p/t, etc...). Funky problem... But quite annoying...

I'm assuming this is a desktop system, not a laptop? Filling out your system specs is helpful:

Welcome to the forum, BTW.

OK...desktop assumed, are you sure there are no options that, for whatever reason, turn off the ability to use these keys together? Beyond that, you might try another keyboard to see if it makes a difference.

I thought they wouldn't have a lot to say regarding this stupid problem, but I've filled most of it out already.

It is a desktop indeed. I can't think of any options that would do so. Doesn't make sense that one setting would stop you from using the magical combination ctrl+alt+del

I've plugged my old (ancient!) keyboard on the ps/2 port and it works fine. But I would rather go back to my newer keyboard of course... I've plugged the "defective" on a laptop at the problem stayed the same. Would that allow you to conclude it is dead?

And thanks for the welcome greeting!

As Golden rightly asks, knowing the make and model of the keyboard would be helpful. A call to the manufacturer might shed some light, but the fact that the problem remains after plugging it into another machine makes it likely that the keyboard is bad.

That keyboard model is no longer in production, but your best bet is to contact Chicony:

To everyone, sorry for the long absence and for not having replie earlier! I was travelling and didn't think about that lost hope of a keyboard. Until today, when I remembered that changing its batteries might help... Worked like a charm... Sorry for the stupid post, i guess?

Take care,
