Back up your data and do a repair install of Windows 7 dvd, if that doesn't work do a clean install of os, somethings missing in your first install.

Thanks, I'll try using the repair disk that I created when I first got the computer. I do not have a OS disk since I bought the computer with the OS already installed.

Did the comp come with a complete image of the os, if so then you can install that. From what i've read here in your thread you've tried the other things so now might be the time to start over clean.

The computer did not come with a image. However there is another result that is not explainable. I booted the computer this morning and went directly to email where I read your post. I then pulled out the repair disk I had created and put it in the CD drive. The system recognized it. I went to the BIOS and changed the primary boot drive to the CD and then I continued the boot after taking out the repair disk. I did not do a repair. I checked Explorer and it recognized the CD drive. I then created a new restore point to give me something to go back to. I don't know what or how the system got repaired but it does work now. A real puzzlement!! I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Maybe it is just good carma, who knows, but you need to figure out how to get the Win 7 dvd because there will come a time you are going to need it to do a repair install or clean install. This is coming from experience, in computing the next bootup may not work so be prepared. You either need another hdd to make a backup image or you need the Win 7 dvd.

I am, of course, very concerned about this problem. Even today, I left the computer running for a couple of hours and it went into a sleep mode. When I woke it up, Explorer did not list the CD\DVD drive. I went thru a restart and there it was in the Explorer. It is still a puzzlement and something I have to deal with somehow because there are times I will need the drive.

1. You should be able to use the eRecovery system to build the Install media, which you might have done already.
or

You will need to contact Gateway and purchase the Install Disk

2. You will want to reload the OS as the factory installs are not always perfect

3. Go here to get drivers for your system and make sure you install the Chipset drivers.

I am confident,, this is an issue with that system, the install of the OS on that system or some software installed on that system

I finally got it fixed. I opened Windows "Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter". I opened "configure a Device" and let it do its thing. When it finished, the problem was fixed.

Well, guess what? The problem is back again. I have done everything suggested in this thread. It worked for awhile and then got more and more of a problem. I even went back to a restore point that I had created when everything worked and it didn't correct the absence of the drive in Explorer. Any suggestions?
