W 7 64-bit Ultimate

Hello joe900, welcome to Seven Forums!

If there's no data on it you care about, have a look at this tutorial at the link below to see if diskpart will detect it so you can do a wipe, clean all (secure erase) to it, that may help as it overwrites any/all data on the entire HDD and be sure to post back with any further questions you may have and to keep us informed.

As an aside to Bare Foot Kids' excellent advice , you will find the ex-Sky HDD a better quality drive than the normal run of the mill computer drive ,I dont Know the exact technical details but GB for GB the SKY drives are approximatly double the price

I think that's clever marketing - not a quality issue.

Yes you are probably right SIW2, I was going by this qoute on one of the sky forums :-

" Drives intended for PVRs are different to those meant for computer use. One of the key differences I believe is error checking. Drives meant for PVRs are more defect tolerant and thus won't skip/jump so much if they encounter a glitch during recording, whereas a drive meant for a pc will be much more fastidious about every bit/byte being accounted for at all times, which can cause problems whilst it phaffs about trying to resolve the error"
