Windows 7 using an Epson printer, kept getting the print failed. Loaded latest drivers no difference. Print spooler service running, nothing in the windows\system32\spool\printers folder. System checked for viruses 100% clean.
We had the problem for some time, and it also transpired that BT's McAfee had expired. We had uninstalled that and replaced with AVG, but we were still getting the problem.
When I read Jeenam's post, I thought I bet that McAfee didn't uninstall cleanly, so ran the McAfee cleanup program, and now the printer works.
So the moral is, if you have McAfee, and even if you uninstall it, run the McAfee cleanup program as well!
Thanks to Jeenam.
