    CD/DVD no longer detected

I'm using Win7, home premium, 64 bit. When I insert a CD in my drive, I no longer get a window asking me what to do with the CD and I don't have the drive listed in Windows Explorer. I used a CD that I used yesterday that worked fine. I've also used 3 other CDs that worked previously. Any suggestions?

Since the problem is so recent, the 1st thing I'd do is a System Restore. That may totally solve the problem if there's been some corruption that happened recently to your system. If it doesn't help, the next thing I'd do is to check to see if there are any recent drivers that you might download. That too could solve your problem.

It could also be a hardware problem, in that your CD - DVD device may have pretty much died.

I did a restore to 2 days ago and that seemed to fix the problem. When I rebooted a window came up saying it was loading the CD/DVD driver. I noticed that the most recent restores stated that it included a system update. When I rebooted, there was no update started. Interesting!! Anyway, thanks very much for your help.

I'm adding an additional question. Every time I boot the computer since the restore, I get a message saying "the system restore completed successfully.....". I've tried Xing the message and closing it but it persists. Is there anyway to stop it from coming up?

I've done some additional experimentation because I have experienced the same problem as I did originally. MY system does not recognize the CD/DVD drive. I resorted to a previous restore point and the system recognized the CD/DVD drive. But, after an update it no longer does. I checked the updates and the one that is causing the problem is titled "Intel Corporation-display-Intel(R) HD graphics". What can I do? Is there anyway to delete the update and how can I turn off the automatic updates?

I downloaded the fix but it didn't work. I then went to device manager (as I don't have an actual disk of software) and requested an update of the driver but was informed that the driver was up to date. Any other ideas?

I have also run a program from Microsoft called MATS that was supposed to fix the problem but it said it couldn't find the CD drive. I also uninstalled the CD drive and rebooted the computer and it didn't work either. The drive was detected in Device Manager but not in Win Explorer. I'm still getting the message that Windows has successfully done a restore every time I reboot the computer. I'd sure like to get these 2 problems fixed. Any ideas?
