    external hard drive issue


    just recently bought a lap top got rid of my desktop
    switched from vista to 7
    problem is one of my ex hdd freezes up windows explorer and sometimes loads but freezes up when i click a folder in it
    i cant afford to lose the stuff on it does anyone have a sloution that could help me
    its an old my book essentials 320 gb

    Hi,

    Have you performed any defragmentation of that disk recently? It might be worth a go.

    so i did that and tried to transfer a small folder about 20 mb and the transfer stopped at about 9 percent
    starts off transfering fast the freezes and transfer rate drops into the low kb/s like right now its at 92 kb and still not moving

    It is worth it to scan your external hard drive for errors, so that you could make alternative arrangements in good time if errors are found. Free software here

    After running that check, you can also try a chkdsk. Follow these steps:

    1. Click Start Orb, type cmd, then right-click on cmd and choose "Run as administrator".
    2. Change to the drive you want to check (e.g. if it is E drive, type E: <hit enter>)
    3. Type chkdsk /R <hit enter>

    This may take some time, so be patient with that. When it finishes, post the resultant text here for us to look at.
