A> i don't understand your terminology? when you turn on it should boot to the splash screen (that hides the start-up listings) then the windows logo screen boots up then the welcome and then your log-in screen

If your Acer slimline is still under warranty they will replace the DVD drive.

Did you uninstall the internal DVD drive in Device Manager driver tab, then restart?

Are you confident enough to check the cable connections between mobo, DVD drive, and power supply? Remember not to touch any electronics without grounding yourself by touching the case.

Are you still under warranty as Acer will help you do this and even replace the DVD drive?

If not, after checking cable connections, look again in Device Manager for CD/DVD drive, and try a CD in drive.

If you have another DVD drive, try swapping it in. You can find them on buy.com or newegg.com for $20. You may have a special drive in that Acer so google the model +DVD drive to find out.

The PC on your picture seems to be Acer Aspire X3950 . It's supposed to be equipped with at least a DVD-ROM drive. Your Device Manager does not show that drive. Instead you are trying to use an external drive.

    1. Let's troubleshoot your internal drive first (I assume you actually have it).

Simplest thing: if your Acer is still under warranty - call Acer support and demand that they replace the drive.

If your warranty has already expired, then you need to go into BIOS and see whether the drive is detected.

To enter BIOS - restart your computer, repeatedly press Delete button just as the computer restarts. If instead of BIOS screen you see Windows welcome screen, then you were too late, repeat.

Once in the BIOS use arrow keys to navigate to "Advanced BIOS features", press enter. The attached image shows a possible view of that menu. Do you see CD/DVD drive in the boot options?

If yes, then your BIOS does detect the drive, if no - the drive is either faulty or disconnected.

Let us first determine this before we go any further. Please post back the results. Good luck.
