It depends entirely on the software you plan to install, and how it plan on using it. List the software and its uses here, so we can give you some suggestions.

Well it will actually be general everyday use. I do plan on running Microsoft Web Developer and a couple other big programs though.
OK. Personally, it doesn't sound like a significant taxing of your system. I would install the 4 x 500GB as separate drives.
I don't think you will get much out of a RAID0. If your BIOS caters for it, you could use 2x500GB in a RAID1 as an internal backup (bear you mind you only end up with 500GB backup space - the second disk is a redundant disk in a RAID1 configuration).
I use a RAID1 for backup, but its too an external unit, and not internal to the computer.
